Steven Leslie attended Kirkcaldy High School and got involved in football first at Woodside Boys Club in Glenrothes before moving on to Kingdom Thistle in Thornton.  He had a year away from them with Raith Rovers at U14 level but it was from Kingdom that Steven joined Dunfermline U17s.

The striker was selected for Scotland Boys in 2008.
