Jim Jefferies first signing as Manager of Dunfermline Athletic, Bernardo was a very experienced 32 year old Spanish goalkeeper. With Paul Gallacher injured and his only option to Chris Smith being U19 keeper Ryan Goodfellow, Jim Jefferies was keen to seek cover for the vital six match run in to the end of the 2001-12 season.
From Zafra in Badajoz a landlocked province bordering Portugal, his previous club Sociedad Deportiva Huesca play in Segunda Division. Bernardo left Huesca in January 2012 after his second spell at the club making a total of 43 appearances. Bernardo has also played for a number of other Spanish clubs including Oviedo, Siero, Amurrio, Orihuela, Deportivo Alaves, Tenerife (on loan) and Recreativo.
He became the eighth European goalkeeper in Dunfermline's history but the first Spanish one following in the footsteps of Geir Karlsen, Bent Martin, Hans Segers, Guido van de Kamp, Zoran Lemajic, Kris Mampaey, Marco Ruitenbeek and Dorus de Vries.
Played one game - the final SPL match of the season v Kilmarnock at East End Park.
