Austin McCann Post Dundee Utd

Monday, 31st Oct 2011

"We said at half time 2-0 down with ten men, to go out and give it a go. We have to take that kind of attitude because down there we need to battle on.

Austin McCann spoke after reviewing Gary Mason's sending off and felt that if red cards were to be shown for those kind of tackles there would be several red cards every week.

"The United players around me thought it was a yellow card at the most but Stevie O'Reilly said that 'it was a lunge and he had to go - that's the rules now.' I thought it was really harsh because about ten minutes later there was a similar kind of tackle on one of our players but we didn't even get a foul for it."

Gary Mason is an important player in the team and the Pars captain hoped that an appeal would overturn the decision:-

"He plays every week, he has done well for us in midfield. Especially in the position that we are in down at the bottom of the league we need all the experienced players that we can get and Mase is certainly one of them."

Times are tough but Ozzie said that there is nothing else to do than keep fighting on:-

"We said at half time in there 2-0 down with ten men, to go out and give it a go. The Manager pushed another one up because we had nothing to lose. We have to take that kind of attitude because down there we need to battle on.

"I think we started well and settled into the game but United hit us with two goals which was disappointing from our behalf. The red card made it even more difficult. The second half performance and getting a goal back made me think we could get an equaliser.

"We were left wide open at the back and that's kind of expected when you have only ten men and United obviously punished us. They were clinical and finished us off."

The defence has taken a new look in recent games with Austin making up a back three with John Potter and Alex Keddie with Jason Thomson and Paddy Boyle dropping back deeper when defending. Oz feels confident in this role:-

"I have played there before a few years ago. We were decent against Hearts and the Manager has been happy with the last couple of games. We weren't happy with the way we lost the first two goals against Dundee United, we could have done better but whether that's to do with the shape or not I'm not sure. It is up to the Manager if he wants to persevere with it. The players are open to changes, whatever gets us a result we will play anyway."
