Callum Fordyce spurred on by young and `old`

Pars defender Callum Fordyce played a full 90 minutes in Thursday`s U20s friendly against the touring Sheffield United Development squad. After the 0-0 draw at Broadwood he told the website that he felt that he was getting stronger with every game:-

"It is coming on well and it`s all about getting my fitness up and getting match sharpness. I still feel that I am a bit behind the rest of the boys. I need to get as much game time as I can so that when the gaffer thinks I am ready that I am available."

Callum has been out since being injured against Ayr United in September last year, he continued:-

"I have been training a lot with the young boys but I know that I am still not ready for first team football. The young boys and Potts have been brilliant with me.

"If I can get a couple more games in the next two weeks I will take things as they come. I just need to progress as well as I can."

At the age of 24 Callum feels that he is still young for a centre half and certainly when paired with John Potter in the centre of defence against Dundonald Bluebell last Saturday. He confessed that it was an ambition of his to play alongside the experienced defender:-

"For a defender like myself playing with a player with such vast experience does help me. Even on the sidelines you can learn off him. Part of my game as a centre back is organising my defence and getting the shape right in front of us so that we are not exposed.

"That makes our job a lot easier and playing with young boys is good for me to communicate with them and try and get my game knowledge back after being out for such a long time. I need to get everything right for me to go back in."

Having watched from the sidelines for such a long time last season, Callum has accepted watching his team mates kick the season off, he added:-

"The boys have done well in pre season. Last season we hit the ground running after a good pre season and we have done the same this season. We had a good win on Tuesday and I thought the boys were terrific against Hearts.

"We have been playing some good stuff and the manager has drilled in to everybody how he wants to play, which is good. The boys are doing really well so long may it continue."

Callum misses the Betfred Cup game at Cowdenbeath but he did admit that he did not find Central Park a great enjoyment.

"That is no excuse really we need to be 100 per cent confident that we can go there and do the business. The boys have quality and we went there last season and got good results there. You just have to go and on the day things will happen. We just have to come out on top."
