Gallacher's Guess Work

Saturday, 13th Aug 2011

You try to put him off his game. The two of them had a set to as to who was going to hit the penalty, so it added to the drama. It is in their heads at the time maybe and works in my favour.

Paul Gallacher saves from Liam Craig

Paul Gallacher's second penalty save in three SPL games is fast attaching hero status to the Dunfermline 'keeper but after the match he was keen to deflect the praise on his defence:-

"I am delighted with the save obviously but I thought the performance the boys put in in front of me was absolutely top notch. They defended well and cleared the lines well. I had a hand in helping to get the win but the boys in front of me were immense."

Penalty saves are not things that are well documented but Paul thinks that is the third time he has saved a Liam Craig penalty. Did Paul know which way Craig would go then?

"Let's be honest, it is guess work. You try to put him off his game. The two of them had a set to as to who was going to hit the penalty, so it added to the drama. It is in their heads at the time maybe and works in my favour. It was just a bit of luck

"He is great with a dead ball, he can usually put it where he wants - he was just unfortunate. I need to take every bit of confidence that I can from saving penalties. It is decent start to my season saving two penalties and although looking back on last weekend I made a mistake I came into this game wanting to play well and banish the demons from last week. Hopefully I have done that now and can kick on now."

For the second game this season Paul's penalty save had a major say in the outcome of the game but the red card shown to John Potter meant that Dunfermline played the final 33 minutes with a one man disadvantage:-

"We finished so well when we were up against it. The boys made some excellent blocks and tackles in front of me. It was hard work but they held out for three points that I thought we deserved."

John Potter sees red

The Pars 'keeper who will be 32 on Tuesday had no argument with Referee George Salmond's penalty decision but questioned the sending off.

"I thought Jason Thomson was covering. As the referee ran past me he said yellow but then he produced a red which I found a bit strange. I think he must have had some confirmation from his linesman. Then he seemed to think that he was going to shoot at goal and it was a goalscoring opportunity and to the letter of the law he had to send him off.

"It is a relief to get our first win. We have picked ourselves up, battled away hard and defended really well to win three points. There are a lot of positives from the game today, we can hopefully build going into next week's game."
