Lewis called up for country

Thursday, 12th Mar 2015

Lewis Martin had been selected for the Scotland Under 19 squad to face Austria, Italy and Croatia at the end of this month.

Lewis will travel for the Elite Round of the European U19 championships meaning he will miss the Pars league match against Morton.

There will be tough challengers for the central defensive berths. Last Saturday the on loan Aberdeen centre back, Scott McKenna lined up for Ayr United against Dunfermline and Dundee United's John Souter is the other contender.

"The last time in Lithuania we played the same team in the first two games but then changed it for the last one. I got game time there and hopefully will in Austria too. It will be another experience. The finals are in Greece but it is only the top team from the group that goes through."

Lewis will not be 19 until April but he will one of the international squad's most experienced players. He has made 42 first team starts and 3 appearances off the bench for Dunfermline. Scorer of an added time equaliser in the last Pars match against Stirling, Lewis is hoping that this Saturday his club side can play better than they did that January afternoon.

"They were down to ten men but in the second half we did not play at all well. They got two goals and my goal at the end rescued a point but we should have had the game out of sight. We took the foot off the gas a bit.

"We are all looking forward to this Saturday's game and we know that we need to win games now. We have said before after a win that we need to go on a run but now we seriously do and I believe that we can do it."

This season Lewis has paired with Gregor Buchanan, Stuart Urquhart, Ross Millen, Kyle McAusland and Declan O'Kane in the under 20s. He claims that he is not under any pressure when his central defensive partner changes:-

"It doesn't matter who it is. Both of us have to step up and do the best we can for the team."

Now the final eight games need to be won and Lewis is confident that the squad has the talent to do it. "Personally I think we have got the best team in the league and the best squad."
