Managers post Morton

Saturday, 14th Aug 2010

14/08/10: JM:- "We didn't play well, I thought Morton were sharper than us, they passed the ball better than us and we had our defenders to thank.

Jim McIntyre spoke honestly to the press after the 2-0 win over Morton:-

"I am absolutely delighted with the three points. We didn't play well, I thought Morton were sharper than us, they passed the ball better than us and we had our defenders to thank. I thought they were quite solid although Morton never cut us open much. Maybe the lack of final ball from Morton and our defence being fairly solid meant we went in at 0-0.

"We were slightly better in the second half but not much. The difference was the finish - when you have a finisher in your team and players who can produce that final ball. The final ball from Gibson's cross can make the difference. We were there last year ourselves - the better side in a lot of games but never took anything from them so it is nice to grind out a win even when we don't play well."

In the absence of Steven Bell and Alex Burke the last thing Dunfermline need was to lose a midfielder but in 31 minutes Nick Phinn was forced to retire after a crunching challenge from Morton's Michael Tidser.

"It made it very difficult. We spoke about the bench before the game, should we put young Ryan Thomson on the bench - sometimes you take gambles especially but being at home when you go for more attacking players in case it is not happening. You want to win your home games; you want to win any game but at home you want players who can come on and give us a lift. We went for that - it kind of backfired a wee bit and left us short.

"Wee Davie (Graham) went into midfield and did his best but then we thought about getting Neil McGregor on. He gave us a little bit solidity in there and helped out Mason."

Morton manager Allan Moore lamented the Pars succour punch in the last ten minutes:-

"We had many opportunities in good areas of the pitch. We totally dominated the game from start until they scored. It was a great counterattack.

"We told them at half time 'don't be caught on the counter because we had that much of the ball. We were playing some really good football and that's exactly what happened, we got caught on the counter.

"They got more crosses into the box in the second half than they did in the first. The counterattack was switched from one side of the park to the other. We had a full back overlapping and we gave the ball away in a silly position. They put a ball in that we thought we had dealt with but we were unlucky, the boy had a wee deflection of somebody and it fell to him.

"If you get those kind of balls into the box you have a chance of scoring. Our balls into the box were absolutely shocking and didn't give our strikers much chance to score.

"We are going to have to work on that because we do not want to be known as a great football team without any punch. That's why we have come away with nothing.

"Jim (McIntyre) will be delighted to be sitting in the dressing room with the three points. If you can play that badly and get three points I hope we do that next week!"
