Moffat's goal is blowing teams away

Monday, 28th Sep 2015

"We have been blowing teams away when we have been scoring early so we just need to try and get back to that."

Michael Moffat came off the bench on Saturday to lead Dunfermline's charge against Airdrieonians and to score an important equaliser that made sure that the Fifers kept themselves in touch of league leaders, Ayr United. He discussed the match:-

"We had a few chances but it was good to get the goal. It was just disappointing that we did not get the win. We put them under a lot of pressure towards the end but they defended well and deep. They had a few breaks as well so it is better than a defeat. When I heard the other results we have not lost any ground which is good."

The striker was introduced in 51st minute after Josh Falkingham sustained a kick in the back but he was confident that an equaliser was always on the cards:-

"When we are playing like the way we are playing you have a lot of possession, creating a lot of chances then there is always a good chance that someone is going to tuck one away. We are just disappointed that we did not score another one."

Michael's goal came from a cross in 74th minute, he described it:-

"I think he caught it full on the volley, I just saw it all the way and luckily enough put it away. It was some cross."

The goal will underline the 30 year olds ambitions to start games for Dunfermline, he agreed:-

"You are always disappointed not to start but it is a big squad with quality all through it. If you are not doing it in every game there is a good chance you won't start. Hopefully I have done myself a favour.

"The manager said after the game that if boys are not doing it then somebody else will come in. You are replacing quality with quality it is not as if it is somebody that is not as good who is going to come in, so it will keep everybody on their toes and that is a good thing.

"There is experience (in the dressing room) that was not here last season. Obviously the two new signings big Mikael (Antoine-Curier) and Marc (McAusland) from St Mirren have played at good levels and have plenty of experience at the top level, that can only be good."

After Airdrieonians went in at the break 1-0 ahead it continued to be difficult for Dunfermline to make any impression until Moffat's 74th minute goal. He just felt this demonstrated the importance of scoring the first goal:-

"If we get it teams will need to change their games and come and have a wee go at you. If they get it, it gives them something to hold on to and defend. That is what happened on Saturday. We have been blowing teams away when we have been scoring early so we just need to try and get back to that."

The crowd at East End Park for the visit of Gary Bollan's team was 3391 and that was bigger than Kilmarnock's SPFL gate for the visit of Hamilton. Does it help the opposition coming to a big stadium and a larger than normal crowd as much as it helps Dunfermline.

"I don't think it helps the opposition when our fans were trying to sook the ball into the net in the second half. It certainly helps us the bigger the crowd here and like we took up to Dundee. Even at Stenhousemuir last week they filled the stand behind the net. It is good to see the stadium getting fuller. I hope they keep coming out to watch us."
