No Laugh In for Martin

Sunday, 11th Jan 2015

It was just one of those days where we played poorly and didn't show what we are capable of.

Lewis Martin's third ever senior goal was not a winning goal and given that the opponents were the team at the bottom of League One, it was not a goal that he was going to go on about. The 18 year old spoke after the 2-2 draw at Forthbank and there was some consolation that his 92nd minute equaliser averted an embarrassing defeat:-

"One nil up at half time against ten men! We should have come out and finished it. We tried to move the ball but we didn't have that pass to go forward."

Dunfermline paid for that was Stirling scored goals in 60th and 79th minutes.

"They got their two goals from a free header at a corner and a second goal tapped in at the back post by my man. We got the goal at the end for a point but we should be going away with three."

The turning point should have been the 38th minute red card shown to Lewis Coult that meant Stirling had to play with ten men for close on an hour. Lewis was the player taken out by the offender and he gave his account of the tackle which was met with a huge reaction from the Dunfermline Athletic players:-

"I thought it was a 50-50 so both of us went in for it but he came over the top and caught my ankle. I thought that it was a red card."

Even with a man down Stirling proved a handful for the better fancied visitors, Lewis continued:-

"Defensively we didn't do well, going forward we didn't do well either. It was just one of those days where we played poorly and didn't show what we are capable of. They were poor goals for us as defenders."

The second goal was a particularly sloppy goal to lose after no one really dealt with the ball in from the right flank by Craig Comrie:-

"He played the ball in and people ran across Ryan Scully. It bounced about, ended up going to my guy and he tapped it in."

The result was the fifth in a row without a win but the Scotland under 19 player is still confident that they will come:-

"We have not won in a while but the wins will come. We need to get there first in the box and at the other end we need to get the goals in."

Lewis goal could not have come much later in the match. It was in the second minute of added time with Ryan Scully up in his opposite number's penalty box in a dire attempt to rescue a point.

"Just before he came up we had a lot of chances in the box. I hit a shot and it was blocked on the line. We have about five chances before Scully came up for the corner. It just fell for me and I hit it."

It was Lewis' second goal of the season but the single point meant that the Fifers are now ten points behind league leaders Stranraer and are out of the play off places in fifth place. Lewis concluded:-

"We need to lift our game, start scoring goals and work harder as a team to defend. Jim Paterson came in and helped me a lot through the game. You could hear him talking all through the game. He will be a good asset to the team."
