Lewis Spence says "Brechin are in our way, we need to knock them out

Lewis Spence spent the latter half of last season as a Brechin City player. Loaned out to the Angus club in January, the 20 year old made 13 appearances and scored three goals as he assisted Darren Dods side avoid the play offs and relegation.

Lewis is looking forward to returning there with the Pars in this Saturday`s Irn-Bru Cup tie.

"I started two games in the Betfred Cup and it was two defeats. I feel that I did not do that well and I have not played in the last few weeks. It is going to be a hard season as we can see from recent results, there will maybe chops and changes so if I am doing well in training that is when I need to be there to step in.

"I am not worrying right now, I am working hard and hopefully the boys pick up as well. Every game is a really hard game - you play Dumbarton, then Hibs, then you go to Raith and home to Queen of the South and Dundee United. Every game is really hard but that is the league we want to be in and playing against the best.

"Last year, no disrespect to the teams (in League One) all of them were part time but we were better than them and we got away with a lot of things that now we are getting punished for. Mistakes and a wee bit of naivety as well. We will grow into this league, it will take time but we need to learn quick so that we are not at the bottom."

The cup tie gives some relief from the intensity of the Championship but Lewis wants to win every game and that includes in cups.

"The main priority is doing well in the league but we want to do well in the cup. Brechin are in our way, we need to knock them out. Obviously I know what it is like up there. It is a hard place to go, it is a wee and tight park. They are doing well just now, won three and drawn one. They will be confident but if we are on our game with everybody right at it, treating it seriously, then we will go through.

The loan period at Brechin lifted Lewis` season last term, he continued:-

"I never got a lot of game time here and my confidence dipped. I wasn`t playing well in 20s games but when I went on loan they bred confidence into me. We started winning, I was getting a few goals and setting up goals. I just started playing really well and I really enjoyed my time up there.

"Darren Dods and Lee Bailey his assistant helped me with my game. They just told me to keep doing what I was doing. It was good, I liked the boys, the stadium, I even like the training. It was different to what I was doing here but I liked it.

"It is a really good part time club, I want them to do well this season because I have mates up there like wee Finn (Graham)."

Lewis` recommendations to the Brechin boss eventually got the former Pars youth, Finn (pictured above v Brechin) the move from Berwick Rangers but now Lewis, mission is to go up to Glebe Park and knock them out the cup.

"When you are playing 90 minutes you are getting fitter, stronger and more confident. The 20s games are good but they are not the same as first team games. That is no disrespect to the 20s boys, they will understand when they go up to first team level that it is a bit of a jump."

As being controversially cut down when through on goal for what would have been a last minute equaliser last Saturday, Lewis hopes that he is back in the manager`s plans. He ended:-

"I want to get back in the team here at Dunfermline as quick as I can and hopefully that will be against Brechin."
