Paul wants Burns Night toast

Wednesday, 28th Dec 2011

Paul Burns: "Lately, we've been chasing games and we've been maybe 2-0 down before we've been starting to come out and show ourselves.

Paul Burns celebrates first Dunfermline goal

Paul Burns hopes to alter his Fir Park record with a win as a Dunfermline player: The 27 year old midfielder has only played Motherwell once before with Queen of the South losing 3-2 in a Scottish Cup tie but a repeat of his winning goal at Tannadice would be a perfect tonic. -

"Obviously you have to remain upbeat. The boys are all positive and we believe that we can go and get a result against Motherwell. We're not down in any way. Maybe we're not getting the wee breaks but that probably happens when you're fighting down there - that you don't get the breaks or the luck. We seem to be punished for every mistake we're making, so maybe that's playing on people's minds a wee bit and people are maybe scared to make a mistake."

Nobody likes the mantle of being bottom of the league at Christmas but Hibs are level on points with the Pars and there are still teams in touching distance:-

"We've played Inverness and we've been very unlucky not to win both games. We know that we can go and compete against teams like that and if we can pick up a result then it changes everything. It breeds confidence from getting three points and then we can move on from there."

Paul 's former club currently hold up the First Division but he had hopes that his move to Dunfermline wouldn't be a relegation fight as well:-

"When you come up to the SPL you know you're stepping up a level and you're going to be playing against better players. You know it's going to be hard and we weren't in any false pretence that it was going to be hard. We knew that results maybe wouldn't go our way sometimes but that's when you find out the character of the team. If we can dig in and try and get a positive result then we can build from there.

"I would prefer an SPL relegation battle to a First Division one, obviously I would rather be playing in the SPL, playing against top sides. We know we can compete because we've beaten Dundee United at Tannadice, we've beaten Hibs through at Easter Road and St Johnstone away as well."

Paul Burns scores his first Dunfermline goal

The belief that a result is possible could spur Paul and his team mates on to a run where they would hope to pick up points. The team spirit is excellent and there is a positive mood in the dressing room where the feeling is that they are only one result away from turning it around.

He acknowledged that Motherwell have been doing really well and was very aware that they are coming off the back of a bad result against Hearts on Saturday:-

"We know we're going to go there and get a tough game, but if we can play to the game plan then we'll get a result - as long as we can out the mistakes and be positive on the offensive side of things. It would be nice if we could get the first goal and then that would change things. Lately, we've been chasing games and we've been maybe 2-0 down before we've been starting to come out and show ourselves. Hopefully we can get the first goal against Motherwell and that will maybe spur us on to score a couple more"
