Greg Shields returns to action but strong Pars line up fail to beat Dons

DUNFERMLINE 2 ABERDEEN 2

A strong Pars reserve team were held to a draw by Aberdeen whose injury time equaliser denied Dunfermline full points. Greg Shields and Scott Morrison came through the 90 minutes and there was a welcome return for Scott Muirhead and Freddie Daquin.

It was Aberdeen who got off to a flyer of a start scoring from a corner on the left after six minutes. Roddy McKenzie protested that he was impeded as he went for early substitute Brian Neill`s inswinger but Kenny HASWELL netted after Daal had flicked on.

Dunfermline fought back into the game creating several good chances. In tenth minute Andy Tod hooked a shot on to the crossbar with the beaten Derek Soutar scrambling back. Eight minutes later Daquin cut in from the right to fire a long range effort narrowly over the top and then Iain Williamson had no fewer than three good chances before he eventually found the net in 36 minutes.

The youngster first broke from halfway and advanced to 25 yards out before firing wide of target. Next he accepted a Craig Wilson cut back having made a good run to the near post but the keeper saved. A header was then might have had a better outcome but following more fine play from Daquin WILLIAMSON met the cross from the right to score from 10 yards.

Aberdeen finished the half well with Chris Maguire`s pace requiring the attention of the experienced Pars defence. Into the second half and both teams had chances to add to their tally.

Scott Morrison blazed one over the crossbar from a deep position and Nick Phinn was denied by a Dons defender while Kyle MacAulay launched a good shot that the post kept out.

Athletic took the lead from a free kick just inside the opposition half in 80 minutes taken while an Aberdeen defender received treatment. Calum SMITH exploited the space that had not been filled running on to take a touch and then finish well.

Aberdeen did not give up and it looked like a Pars win until Aberdeen were awarded a free kick. Everyone went up for this and Neil McVitie crossed for MacAulay. As the ball broke NEIL nipped in to tap in an equaliser.
