Dunfermline 1 Hearts 0

MATCH PICTURES
Six of the Pars U19 squad called in sick last Monday revealing possible reasons why they had put in such a sub standard performance in their last game against Motherwell, but right from the kick off against top of the table Hearts, Hamish French`s side duly went out and proved that on their day they can compete with the best.

All the early play was in the visitors half with a Blair Henderson header and a Fraser Moncrieff shot creating the first danger of the game. In 10th minute, Hearts keeper Jack Hamilton had to save a low drive from 20 yards by Henderson but in their first foray of the game Hearts were denied by the goalpost amidst a frantic goalmouth scramble.

Kerr Young scores the goal that won the match

On the quarter hour a Scott Mercer corner from the left was nodded on by Henderson for Kerr YOUNG to arrive at the far post to head home a well deserved goal. It was Hearts who had the next good chance 12 minutes later when a Ryan Stewart shot was pushed around his right hand post by Ryan Goodfellow.

Dunfermline continued to enjoy the bulk of possession and after Mercer picked out Henderson on the edge of the opposition box the ball was laid back for Shaun Byrne to crash a good shot on target that was deflected for a corner.

Wide men, Billy King and Sam Nicholson were the source of any trouble for the Pars defence and it was King in 37 minutes who fed Chris Tobly a chance but fortunately Goodfellow put in a good block. Hearts continued their spirited end to the first half with unsuccessful shots from Murdoch and McGhee.

Half time: Dunfermline 1 Hearts 0

Dunfermline assumed ascendancy from the restart forcing several corners but failed to test keeper Hamilton. Fraser Moncrieff was unfortunate with three good chances to finish the game. In 69 minutes Henderson won the ball and slid it to Chris Hackland who then squared for the striker but his poor connection went straight to Hamilton. Seven minutes later Henderson managed to head the ball down into Moncrieff`s feet and this time his shot dropped narrowly outside the right goalpost.

Two minutes later Goodfellow made a fantastic save from a Chris Kane free kick when the ball slipped through a five man defensive wall but the keeper was quickly across his goal line to turn the shot around his left hand post. Then four minutes later a skied clearance from the Hearts goalkeeper was passed to Moncrieff who smashed his shot over the crossbar. Henderson had the final chance two minutes from time but his attempt flashed across the front of goal. After that the Pars saw the match out comfortably to claim all three points.

This was a fine and creditable performance from the U19s. A good result going into the final three games that will come in the space of eight days.
