The U19s kicked off their SPL season with a good win over St Mirren at the University of Stirling Sports Institute on Friday morning. The away team started the stronger, pegging Dunfermline back and might have capitalised on that but gradually the Pars got up to speed with the game.

Allan Smith scores 1-0

A point blank save from keeper Ryan Goodfellow kept the scoresheet blank and so when Allan SMITH drilled the ball into far corner of the net in 28 minutes it shot the Pars into the lead. The supply for the goal had come from a Jordan Brown throw in on the right that Scott Mercer latched on to, took to the byeline and then cut back for the Selkirk newcomer to score.

St Mirren continued to force corners and get chances but Hamish French`s team defended well

The Pars doubled their lead late in the first half with a goal made on the left this time. Andy Ritchie sent Ross Drummond down the left wing and his pace allowed him a cross that SMITH met to score with a diving header. Mark Lamont came close for Saints with a header just on the half time whistle but at the break Dunfermline led 2-0.

The opposition came out fighting to get back into the game and the Pars did not see as much of the ball as they`d have wanted. Nevertheless the defence and Goodfellow held on well until a quickly taken free kick was converted by half time sub Jon SCULLION. Lifted by the goal St Mirren pressed but their corners produced no goals and the two goal advantage was re-established on 70 minutes.

A corner was not completely defended and Ross Millen sent the ball over from the left for Kerr YOUNG, at the back post, to head across goal and into the net. After that Dunfermline saw the game out in relative comfort to secure three points, looking dangerous in the closing minutes. It was a hard game for this young Dunfermline side who started with just two outfield second year U19s.
