Woods Hampden Dream

Thursday, 23rd Apr 2009

"By the time we kick off we will know who else is in the final and obviously if it is Rangers the winners of our match will go into Europe."

Calum Woods

Calum Woods hasn't won a cup winners medal since he was at school so there is everything for him to play for on Sunday.  He claims that "it would be amazing for us if we can get to the Final.

"I was on the bench for the Semi Final in 2007 and for the final I wasn't in the squad so I haven't actually played there. It was really painful because I was half expecting to be on the bench but I was left out of the squad and I was really gutted.  It was hard to take but hopefully I will get a chance to get there this time."

Big matches at major stadiums is what every young player yearns for.  The Semi Final has to be negotiated before Calum has the chance to make up for that 2007 Final disappointment.  Woods claims that the quarter final replay at Pittodrie was the biggest game of his career. Getting the match to a penalty shoot out proved to be fraught with dangers. Aberdeen had two good chances in the opening five minutes and could also have claimed victory in the dying minutes but Dunfermline stuck to their task and succeeded in the penalty shoot out.

Calum Woods v Aberdeen 07/03/09

"When it got to penalties the Manager told us we had a brilliant chance of going through. We were altogether."

The 22 year old  was in no doubt that he wanted to take one of the penalties and had already decided which corner he was going to sink it in.  It was the same side that he had chosen in the last penalty shoot out at Ayr in the CIS Insurance Cup but the Manager was not aware of Calum's record - taken one missed one  - but the Englishman had proven his capabilities in practice.

Calum said of the walk up from the half way line to take his penalty:-

"I felt quite confident. I knew where I was going to put it. It was a bit of a long walk so I put a bit of a jog on. There were a lot of Aberdeen fans behind the goal so I got a bit nervous. We were really happy, it was brilliant like and we raced across to the fans.

"I have played against Falkirk away a couple of seasons ago so I know what to expect. People tell you as well but I want to play that game at Hampden. By the time we kick off we will know who else is in the final and obviously if it is Rangers the winners of our match will go into Europe. That would be brilliant."
