Dunfermline Athletic - Fife Cup Winners 2018-2019

DUNFERMLINE 3 EAST FIFE 0

Despite starting only four players who saw off Raith Rovers in the semi final, it was a strong reserve side, experienced for their youthfulness that Greg Shields was able to put out against East Fife. The final of the 2018-2019 Fife Cup was played at East End Park on Tuesday evening. The side included trialist Vinnie Steels.

East Fife fielded five players who were on their first team bench on the previous Saturday - keeper Brett Long, Craig Watson, Danny Denholm, Chris Duggan and Kevin Smith.

The home side threatened as early as the fourth minute, Lewis Sawers picked up a loose ball on half way, made ground down the right before executing a decent low ball in but there were no takers. The pressure was maintained when Steels won a corner on the left that Matty Bowman delivered but Long got his fist to it and Matty Todd’s follow up was blocked.

Long was in necessary action again just two minutes later when Sawers got a shot on a Josh Edwards cross. Gabby McGill’s shot was next deflected for another corner that was cleared by East Fife after Bowman and Allan took it short.

It had been one way traffic and it was no real surprise when Dunfermline went ahead in 22 minutes. Tom LANG headed home a Bowman corner that had been won on the left by Steels. 1-0

Goalscorer Tom Lang is congratulated for his goal

East Fife lost Jordan Elliot in 24 minutes and Jack Healy became the first sub of the match.

The second goal was scored from the penalty spot. Lewis Sawers was fouled after McGill’s shot was blocked by Long and Gabby McGILL converted 2-0

Lang headed over from a 34th minute corner before an East Fife free kick taken by Danny Devine was turned behind by Paul Brown.

A third Dunfermline goal came in 37 minutes after Todd had come close with a shot that was deflected for a corner on the right. Trialist Steels gathered the ball and returned it from the left for Cammy GRAHAM to finish 3-0.

Half time: Dunfermline 3 East Fife 0

East Fife made one substitution before the second half got underway, Connor Dewar coming on for Kevin Smith. An early chance for the Pars came from a free kick on the right, Josh Edwards never got decent contact on the cross and his header went wide right.

Cammy Graham and Paul Brown

In 52 minutes Sawers set Bowman off up the right and Sawers was unlucky to see the return cut out by the opposition defence. Graham was subbed by Quinn Coulston in 63 minutes and in the next attack Todd sent an attempt from an acute angle into the right side netting.

Coulston to Bowman but he blasted his 82nd minute shot from the edge of the box over the top.

Vinnie Steels went off in 85th minute to be replaced by 15 year old Arran Dair. The 18 year old from Burnley was given an appreciative applause from the sidelines.

An injury to Chris Duggan caused East Fife to finish the game with ten men. Dair made a good run and cut the ball back into the six yard box but his cross was intercepted.

The match had really won on the basis of the first half performance and it was a deserved result.

The Pars ran out comfortable winners and David Allan, President of the Fifeshire Football Association, accompanied by Bob Mullen presented the Fife Cup to Paul Brown, captain of the winning team.
