U21 Scottish Premier League

DUNFERMLINE 3 KILMARNOCK 0

Dunfermline fully deserved their convincing win in this home fixture played at East End Park on 17th October. Whilst the game could have been called a game of one half, that we would not be a fair reflection on the overall performance of the young Pars side who controlled play for much of the match.

Steven Hampshire showed why he is already challenging for a first team place by stamping his name all over the game. During an excellent first half performance he scored the young Pars first goal and made the third.

Jimmy Nicholl again had good cause to be pleased with the under 21s performance as a strong Pars side virtually overwhelmed their young Killie counterparts within the first 45 minutes.

David Moss set the Pars going when he put a strong shot just over the bar from around 20 yards. out. This was the signal that the Pars would take the ascendancy as they embarked upon a period of intense pressure. Hampshire pounced upon a slack Killie clearance and although he may have been a little lucky not to have been adjudge to be offside, he galloped away from the Kilmarnock defenders to calmly put the ball past Colin Meldrum in the Killie goal.

Dunfermline then had some defending to do when first Jerome Vareille brought out a good save from Scott Thomson and then Di Giacomo was unlucky to see his shot rebound harmlessly off the inside of the Pars post.

The Pars then launched a clever counter attack and poor Meldrum in goal was faced with two Pars players racing towards him. Unfortunately for Killie, The goalie only succeeded in bringing Lee Bullen down in the penalty box, earning himself a booking in the process and concealing a penalty. This was duly converted by Russell HUGGON who thumped his shot into the net with confidence. 2-0

The Pars third goal was the result of a good movement down the right side which ended with Hampshire cutting the ball back for what seems to be an easy prod home for MOSS. 3-0

Bullen suffered an injury which meant substitute Chris Templeman was introduced as early as 26th minute. The sub controlled a clearance beat the Killie defence before floating his chipped shot just over the bar.

Thomson came to the Pars rescue with two fine stops from Vareille. The Pars then had the ball in the net again courtesy of Moss but unfortunately the referee disallowed. Junior Mendes created a half chance but having jinked his way past the Killie defenders, despite evading repeated files in the box, his near post effort was too soft.

Killie came close a couple of times, but the Pars were clearly in the ascendancy again, and came close when Mendes played 1–2 off Huggon on the edge of the box but could evade the oncoming Meldrum. For the Pars, McGarty, Boyle and Hampshire shone and Thomson put in a solid performance between the sticks.
