U19s v Inverness CT

The three goal victory possibly flattered the Highlanders as youths lose to two mistakes and a dubious penalty.

INVERNESS CT 3 DUNFERMLINE 0

Dunfermline travelled north to the Highland Capital for this SPL Under 19 fixture played at Grant Street Park but Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for the Fife club as the youths lost to two mistakes and a dubious penalty.

The home side were first to force a save with Darren Stewart stopping the fifth minute shot and then following up with a brave dive at the feet of an opponent.

Playing down the slope the Pars had a series of opportunities to score. Alan McDonough headed a Davie Muir corner for the keeper John Calder to save. Then good build up play allowed Muir a shot from the edge of the box but his effort was deflected over the crossbar. When Clark Kay delivered a long diagonal pass and Scott McBride was unlucky to see his header meet with a similar fate.

Following a corner on the left two chances came and went. Muir`s header returned the ball across the face of goal and the half clearance ended back at his feet and he sent the ball back in for only the most desperate of clearances to keep the match goalless.

As half time approached McDonough was presented with a good chance but his shot came back off the keeper to set up Caley Thistle`s opener. Neil Fenwick should have had possession on half way but a lapse let the Inverness trialist through to beat Stewart with a good finish and instead of going in a deserved lead the Pars were a goal down.

On the hour the home team were given a penalty decision when with no contact was made their player went down in the box. Martin Jack scored from the spot kick and the Pars had to push forward. Fenwick almost got one back when Patrick Halpin`s free kick in from the left but he hooked the shot over the top.

A third Caley goal was denied by the post in 67 minutes and then eight minutes later by Stewart`s fine double save. The Pars rallied for a late flurry but Calder saved from McBride and as they pressed were caught on the break. Fenwick allowed a long ball to sail over his head and Gary Wood ran in to finish.

The three goal victory possibly flattered the Highlanders but with eight of these young Dunfermline players featuring in their second match in four days it was a valiant try in a luckless match.
