Betfred Cup: Four Dunfermline debuts - Whittaker, McInroy, Watson and O’Hara. Kevin O’Hara (26 pen.) 0-1:

After the absence of competitive football for almost seven months Dunfermline were pleased to travel to the C&G Systems Stadium to face League One opposition in the shape of Dumbarton. The attendance was limited to club directors and media meaning that the crowd probably numbered around 30.

Stevie Crawford handed four players their starting debuts - Steven Whittaker, Kerr McInroy, Paul Watson and Kevin O’Hara. He had eight players on the bench including Fraser Murray on loan from Hibs, Iain Wilson and Declan McManus.

Jim Duffy’s Dumbarton side included former Pars Nat Wedderburn and PJ Crossan and it was the hosts who kicked off defending the goal at the river end. From a Josh Edwards throw in on the left, Ryan Dow and Kyle Turner worked the ball right for Dunfermline to manage a shot through Aaron Comrie within two minutes but the effort lacked power and was easily defended.

Next minute Pars keeper Owain Fôn Williams was tested by a low Crossan shot that he beat away for a corner on the left that was over hit when delivered. Thomas tried a tricky cross through the Dumbarton box with just too much on it for McInroy to catch.

A surging run from Edwards took play from his own half to set up Turner for a ninth minute shot that keeper Kevin Dabrowski parried away. Then Thomas took the ball left and got over a dangerous cross that Dow met but headed outside the near post.

Midway through the first half Dow assumed responsibility from a free kick after Thomas had been checked. When the ball was flighted in towards the six yard box the ball was headed by one Dumbarton defender on to another before being booted clear.

The Pars were then awarded a penalty after Dow’s cross from the left hit the hand of Morgyn Neill. Referee Gavin Ross pointed to the spot and as the home side and their bench argued about the decision, Neill and then his captain Stuart Carswell were yellow carded. Kevin O’HARA was eventually able to take what by then was a 26th minute spot kick and he sunk the ball low into the left side of the net. 0-1

The Fifers looked composed and comfortable but ten minutes past before there was a decent effort at either end, that saw McInroy dispossess Wedderburn 27 yards out to release a shot that went wide right.

Five minutes from the interval Edwards was forward to slip the ball to McInroy and his switch to Turner set the Pars no.8 up for a shot from the edge of the box that just cleared the bar. Dumbarton broke and Stefan McCluskey more than cleared the bar and perimeter fence as he blasted his chance into the car park.

It was a half in which Dunfermline held possession and passed the ball about well but at the break just the penalty goal separated the teams.

Half time: Dumbarton 0 Dunfermline 1

First incident of note in the second half was an injury to McCluskey after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Comrie. Chris Hamilton subsequently became the first sub of the tie replacing the injured Son in 52 minutes.

Without really threatening Dumbarton had a good determined effort to find the equaliser. Whittaker exchanged passes with Edwards before he forced a corner on the left. Thomas sent the ball to the vacated far side of the box where Euan Murray ran in and headed on target but his effort was diverted wide for a corner on the right. Before that was taken Fraser Murray replaced Ryan Dow but the corner changed nothing.

PJ forced a Dumbarton corner off Comrie and when PJ delivered there were appeals for a hand ball but no penalty was given. Two minutes later in 70th minute Comrie turned the ball behind but from that corner Dunfermline broke with Thomas finding F Murray wide right and O’Hara slotted in the cross. The offside flag had been raised so it remained 1-0.

McGeever collected a yellow card in conceding a 73rd minute free kick and Dabrowski had to be alert to stop F Murray’s attempt. The right upright then denied Dumbarton the equaliser two minutes later when PJ’s shot was curled in from 20 yards out.

McInroy shot from distance and was awarded with a 79th minute corner that Dumbarton duly defended. As the rain came pouring down Drabowski did really well to stop a difficult shot from F Murray and the offside flag went up again as McManus looked to convert on the follow up.

There was a let off for Dumbarton in 87 minutes when Whittaker sent the ball through the middle but with McManus seeking to get off the mark, Drabowski came out to blast the ball into touch.

McManus made a tremendous run up the right touchline to get in a cross that the keeper could only parry and Thomas’s follow up was critically deflected behind by Hamilton.

As the midpoint of the first half past arrived after the Fifers had enjoyed the bulk of the possession without testing the Dumbarton keeper, Scott Gallacher. Joe Cardle and Michael Paton had been involved in promising breaks but the Dumbarton defence held only as far as the 24thminute.
