KILMARNOCK RESERVES 3 DUNFERMLINE RESERVES 1

A windy and frequently wet Rugby Park was the venue for the Reserve League match against Kilmarnock on Monday afternoon. It was ninth placed Pars v eighth placed Killie.

Greg Shields returning to the club that he made 60 league appearances for during his career, had the luxury of including several first team squad players - Cammy Gill, Danny Devine, Stuart Morrison, Tom Beadling, Joe Thomson, Gabby McGill, Josh Coley and captain for this match, Matthew Todd.

Kilmarnock fielded a younger team with just two players listed as first team squad - Stephen Hendrie and Harvey St Clair - in addition to Iain Wilson who is on loan at QOS. They came into the side the only changes to the team that started and went down 2-1 at home last time out against Motherwell.

The hosts kicked off and play was all in the middle of the park until the fourth minute when Matty Bowman’s cross from the right was driven wide right by Todd from 20 yards out.

The Pars defence contained their opponents and the build up was patient and controlled. In 13th minute a fine pass from Beadling picked out Coulson but his shot was blocked. Three minutes later the Fifers were undone when Kenny Barr broke through in the right channel to feed Iain WILSON a ball that he dispatched into the top left corner. 1-0

Beadling’s pass teed up Todd for a 21st minute chance 25 yards out but keeper Curtis Lyle dropped to his left to hold. Harvey St Clair was then forced to retire and Andy Monk was Killie’s 22nd minute sub.

Thomson picked out McGill four minutes later but on the edge of the Killie box, Ally Taylor intercepted the lay off.

Eleven minutes from the interval a Bowman cross to the far post again fell for Todd and this time he forced Lyle into tipping the ball over his crossbar. Killie cleared the resultant corner despite Beadling racing in to try and place a glancing header.

At the other end Gill held an on-target header from Connell before McGill and Coley linked in the Killie box but the winger’s 42nd minute shot was blocked.

Half time: Kilmarnock 1 Dunfermline 0

The Premiership club had the ball on the net just 40 seconds after the restart when Monk headed in a McDonald cross but thankfully the offside flag had been raised.

A 52nd minute Pars corner delivered by Bowman from the left was well met by McGill but the home defence blocked that shot. Then at the other end next minute McDonald’s cross from the left corner flag dropped for Monk on the right side of the box and Gill pulled off an impressive save at the base of his left hand post to deny Killie a second goal.

Greg Shields switched Todd with Coulson and the sixteen year old was pushed higher up alongside McGill. The Pars were to go further ahead in 65 minutes and it was to unfortunate own goal. Brindley got in on the left side of the box and his cross for Barr at the far post went into the net off Devine as Fenton attempted to clear. 2-0

A double substitution saw Dunfermline change things again in 67 minutes. Cammy Graham and Lewis Sawers were introduced for Quinn Coulson and Josh Coley. Thomas Bragg followed seven minutes later as Matthew Todd was withdrawn.

Graham and Sawers combined to create an opening but the latter’s ball into the six yard box got no takers. Kilmarnock’s McDonald fired a 29 yard free kick on to the roof of Gill’s net before Josh Robertson and Lucas Berry came on for the final nine minutes. Stuart Morrison and Tom Beadling went off.

When Graham fed the ball to McGill he sent Fenton up the left but the keeper smothered his cross. Four minutes from time however Andy MONK was well placed to receive a ball swung in from the left and he found the bottom right of the Pars net. 3-0

There was to be a consolation for the Fifers when they got a goal back in 89 minutes. Fenton fed the ball into Graham as he broke in on the left side of the Killie box and his well struck shot hit the base of the right upright. Bowman returned the ball into the six yard box and it found the net off the back of Killie`s Hendrie. 3-1
