Betfred Cup: three changes as Fôn Williams, Comrie and Dow make way for Gill, Wilson and Turner. Euan Murray (55) 0-1: Fraser Murray (72) 0-2: Fraser Murray 0-3:

Top of the group, Dunfermline took on their Premiership opponents at BBSP Stadium Rugby Park. This was just the second tie between the teams in the last forty years with the Fifers hoping to repeat the most recent tie and success in September 2005.

Due to the Kilmarnock squad being asked to isolate after positive Covid-19 tests, the game had been in doubt right up until 24 hours before the kick off. Their manager Alex Dyer was able to supplement the first team players who were available with youth team players to be able to fulfil the fixture. Only three players that started their last first team match against St Mirren started this game - Gary Dicker, Chris Burke and Nicke Kabamba.

Three others Brandon Haunstrup, Rory McKenzie and 35 year old keeper Colin Doyle came off the bench and into the team meaning the remains five places were taken by Kilmarnock youth players.

Seeking a third win in a row, Stevie Crawford made three changes Owain Fôn Williams, Aaron Comrie and Ryan Dow making way for Cammy Gill, Iain Wilson and Kyle Turner.

Kilmarnock kicked off and in the opening minutes apart from one Fraser Murray run up the right wing, the hosts retained possession. Then a long string of Pars passes culminated in a neat one two from O’Hara back to Turner whose eighth minute shot from the edge of the box escaped wide left.

The first corner of the night came after 15 minutes after Turner picked out Thomas and his effort was deflected behind. Euan Deveney was first to Thomas’ delivery and this sent Killie away on the break. Nicke Kabamba was tracked back by Whittaker and he failed to get a shot in or lay the ball of to the better placed Steven Warnock.

Four minutes later Declan McManus released a great effort from the left corner of the Killie box but was unlucky to watch the ball travel wide right of goal.

A Labamba shot rebounded off Paul Watson to give Kilmarnock a corner on the left and when that went behind off Wilson another followed from the right. Burke again took charge but Killie could only send the ball behind.

Both sides tried to play good passing football but the game lacked opportunities and the keepers were not tested. Turner sent McManus away on the break just five minutes from the break but Killie captain Dicker covered and cleared.

Back at the other end Burke swung over a dangerous ball from the right and Whittaker did really well under pressure from Kabamba to head the ball away for a throw in on the Fifers right. Another Burke cross was cleared by Watson but the young home side would have to be pleased with their 45 minutes work when they managed 56% possession.

O’Hara got the second half underway with the Pars attacking the stand that normally holds the away fans. A corner was forced within 40 seconds but Killie survived that and a cross that McManus tried to sneak in at the near post but the keeper read it.

Dunfermline continued to press and two shots on target were blocked from F Murray and O’Hara. Declan McManus won a free kick was he ran on to an O’Hara flick on and forced a yellow card out of Gary Dicker. Dec assumed responsibility for the setpiece but hit it over the four man wall and the crossbar.

Thomas’ skills won a free kick on the left just about on the byeline and his delivery was perfect for Euan MURRAY, a cut and paste from Friday night’s headed opener against Falkirk. 0-1

On the hour Doyle tipped away another great delivery from Thomas, the ball just flashing across in front of McManus. Paul Watson got his head to Thomas’ corner from the right but the ball went over the bar.

Kilmarnock subbed 20 year old Innes Cameron with 18 year old Josh Rennie and then Ryan Dow came on in 66 minutes for Kevin O’Hara. In between times Burke came very close with a 35 yard effort that landed on the roof of the Pars net.

The Killie sub tested Cammy Gill with a 68th minute header before Thomas with a cross cum shot hit the far post. The second Dunfermline goal was only four minutes away however. McManus forced the ball off Sloan at the left corner flag, he laid the ball back to Thomas before running back to collect the next pass and cross. Fraser MURRAY was perfectly placed to head the ball down into the bottom right. 0-2

Lewis McCann had come on in 80th minute and was taken down to hand the Pars a free kick 35 yards out. Fraser MURRAY stood over the ball clearly aiming up his shot while Killie built a two man wall. That left the on loan Hibee a smashing clinical finish into the top left corner. 0-3

Kilmarnock fielded another three subs including Ross Smith the day before his seventeenth birthday but the contest was over and nine points from the three Betfred Cup games established the Pars as firm favourites to win their group with one game against Clyde remaining.

Betfred Cup: First visit to BBSP Stadium Rugby Park for more than eight years

Dunfermline and Kilmarnock have met 23 times in the League Cup with the Ayrshire side holding an advantage with ten wins to the Pars eight and five drawn. There has been just one tie played between them in the last forty years that being a stunning 4-3 win for the Fifers at Rugby Park in September 2005.

Over the last twelve meetings, Kilmarnock have had the upper hand winning seven of the contests. DA have managed to win only three with two games ending up all square.  Last time the clubs met at Rugby Park in January 2012, goals from Andy Barrowman, Joe Cardle and Liam Buchanan secured the Pars last win over Killie. Having taken just two points from the opening seven league matches of the 2005-2006 the Pars travelled to Rugby Park to face a Kilmarnock side that had defeated them just ten days before.

In just seven minutes Jamie McCUNNIE sent a fine shot into the far left of the net from 25 yards. 0-1

80 seconds later Liam Horsted was in good position on the left receiving a Yannick Zambernardi free kick to send the ball dangerously along the six yard line and a good leap from Derek YOUNG provided a straight forward header into the net. Two nil up in less than 8 minutes.

Eight more minutes and the Pars went into an incredible three goal lead. A McCunnie clearance away from the Dunfermline penalty box dropped nicely for Bartosz Tarachulski and although the home fans were appealing for a foul as the Pole brushed off Gordon Greer the big striker advanced on goal and released a good shot that Combe beat away but only as far as Derek YOUNG would couldn’t fail to score from 18 yards. 0-3

Kris Boyd got a goal back in 8th minute of the second half before in 64th minute, Man of the Match Derek YOUNG slotted in at an angle from the right to complete an impressive hattrick. 1-4

That should have settled it but an own goal when Naismith`s cross from the right was deflected into his own goal by Scott WILSON from inside his six yard box just nine minutes later. 2-4

In the third minute of added time Kris BOYD drove a 25 yard free kick straight through the defensive wall to cut the deficit to one but it was too late to do anything other than change the complexion of the scoreline in a game that the Pars won easily.
