Danny breaks his Dunfermline Duck

Friday, 27th Jul 2018

“We are in a great position but I know the boys will want to put in a good performance to get a win.”

Having scored two goals for Inverness Caley Thistle in the space of four days in May 2016, Danny Devine could hardly have predicted that he would go 74 games before finding the net again. His debut goal for his new club was the Pars opener and their starter for seven against Brechin so unsurprisingly he was delighted to ensure that the drought did not continue any longer.

“It is good to get off the mark early doors. It has been a long time coming since I scored a goal but I am delighted to help the team to a convincing victory.

“We as defenders have to take priority in clean sheets, our main aim going into a game is to keep the opposition out but it is always good to get up and help the attacking boys out.”

With a back three of Danny, Lee Ashcroft and Mark Durnan, Dunfermline have plenty of height in the team and the three big men at the back can go up when required. Danny continued:-

“We like to be a threat in the opposition box and if you look at the World Cup it proved that setpieces are vital. It is up to the manager really, if he wants one of us to stay we can do that.”

Playing 3-5-2 appears to have clicked with the new players in the team and Danny explained that he played in that formation quite a lot over the last two seasons at Patrick Thistle.

“I am quite comfortable with it, I know my role. I think it does take a bit of getting used to but once the lads know their role it is a pretty solid shape.

“There is a real attacking side to it as well. It is just about getting the balance right. Beyond that I am enjoying it at the minute.

“It is still early days but I think the boys are starting to gel now as a team, working well together. The last three results are starting to show that, hopefully we can keep building and keep improving.”

Some might say, especially in Dundee that it is still pre season but Danny feels it is good to get into the habit of winning football games, scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.

“That is what we have done at the start of this league cup. We have hit the ground running in terms of goals conceded but also scoring at the other end.

“Things are looking good. The boys put in a great shift in the game against Dundee, Premiership opposition. We know the quality that we have got in the squad and it is up to us to go out and show the fans and other teams how good we are.”

Next opportunity to impress is at home to Stirling in the final group match in the Betfred Cup:-

“It is one of those games where it is all about our attitude and how we approach the game. It was similar at Brechin and I think the boys showed great attitude to get the job done. Saturday will be similar, we are in a great position but I know the boys will want to put in a good performance to get a win.”
