Debut goal and winning start

Saturday, 2nd Aug 2014

Close season signing Michael Moffat got his goals account off the mark on Saturday when he scored the third goal of five against Annan.

That is the start of what he targets as a twenty goal season for Dunfermline. He told the media:-

"It was good to get off the mark, I probably should have scored in the first half with a couple of runs but it is always nice to get the first competitive goal out of the way in the first game. It is a monkey off the back because you do not want to go five or six games without scoring because then people might start talking about it. I am happy enough today with the goal and the performance of everyone,"

With the first goal in the bag Michael was happy to declare a target for his first season at East End Park.

"I always try to get to twenty but as long as we are winning it doesn't really matter who is scoring. Personally I always try and set a target of twenty, it would be nice to get that again. I scored twenty seven last season. People might be expecting me to get the same again but I don't think they will be too bothered how many I score as long as we are winning. I put the pressure on myself to try and get the twenty because you are playing well into forty games if you play the games. So a ratio of one in two."

Dunfermline signed the 21 year old striker Gozie Ugwu on Friday and Michael is looking forward to a possible striking partnership with the 21 year old from Oxford. Currently the pair are being put up in the same hotel so this has given Michael a great opportunity to get to know the new boy better:-

"It can only be good that players come in and create competition for positions. I think we are covered in every area just about, we have a really strong squad and it can only be helpful if somebody is not doing the job on the park then somebody else will come in and get the chance. You need to be on your toes and at your best."

Asked how much can be learned from merely talking to your potential striking partner, Michael replied:-

"I think the big man was down at Reading last year and don't really know if he played that many games. All the strikers are different in their own way so it will be interesting to see who gets to start. Everybody can do a different job so it is exciting times. Hopefully whoever plays can strike up a partnership with him and get some goals."

Michael has had a couple of days training with Gozie and says that all the players have been very impressed with the talent they have witnessed:-

"I don't think he has done much of a pre season; there is a wee question over his fitness so I am sure over the next couple of weeks he will get himself nice and fit, do some extra training and be raring to go. Tuesday might be too quick but maybe Saturday or the following Saturday he will be in contention."
