Clark Kay scores winner for Dunfermline in SFA Youth Cup Third Round penalty shoot out.

DUNFERMLINE 1 MOTHERWELL 1
After extra time, Dunfermline won 6-5 on penalties

Only five days after these teams drew 1-1 in the league, they were pitched together again in the SFA Youth Cup played at East End Park on Sunday afternoon. Dunfermline showed four changes from the team that played at the Dalzell Playing Fields but each one brought in more experienced players with Clark Kay, Davie Muir, Iain Williamson and Alan McDonough returning.

Motherwell settled quickest and took the game to their opponents. They netted in the fifth minute but two `Well players were offside as the free kick was played in from the left.

Dunfermline`s first real testing of the Lanarkshire outfit came six minutes later. A sweet and swift move from Nck Phinn to Calum Smith and then to Alan McDonough produced a fine cross from the right byeline that Iain Williamson just could not sufficiently control to shoot on target but when the ball broke to Muir he struck a good shot from 18 yards that narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Pars keeper Greg Paterson was seeing a fair amount of play in front of him but dealt easily with a cross cum shot from Alex Donnelly and header from Craig Glitwell Motherwell won several corners but none that unduly tested Paterson.

In 29th minute another good flowing move almost paid dividend for Muir. McDonough sent the ball wide right for Sean Muhsin and his return to the feet of Muir was blocked just 12 yards out and a corner followed. Clark Kay won the ball to tee up McDonough but his goal bound shot hit the face of a defender. The Pars striker next tried a 35 yard effort from the right that skimmed over the wrong side of the roof of the net.

Greg Paterson came out to bravely dive at the feet of Jamie Murphy in 36 minutes as the Well no.9 left Kay in his wake but the young Pars keeper pulled off a fine save to take the ball and preserve his shut out. Nick Phinn connected well with a Muhsin cross from a Howie free kick but while having power the shot was well wide to right of target.

In the last minute of the first half McDonough had another shot blocked after Muhsin`s cut back was laid off by Smith but with just ten seconds of the first 45 minutes remaining Sean Muhsin collected a cleared ball on the right side to drill in a shot from 16 yards. It needed just a touch to beat the keeper and that came off Well centre back David NIXON to give the Pars the lead at the break.

U19s v Motherwell

The Fifers resumed in attacking mode with McDonough shooting inches wide after Williamson controlled a Howie cross and laid in back for a 20 yard shot. In 56th minute Calum Smith`s penalty box header from a Well free kick on the right sent Muhsin on a run up the length of the par but he was unlucky to have his final ball to McDonough cut out.

Iain Williamson then turned on the style that installed the faith in Craig Robertson to give the 18 year old his first taste of the SPL the previous day at Ibrox. Taking the ball to the right he beat his defender and placed a fine delivery into the box. Smith let it run through to Phinn but his effort brought groans of disappointment from the stand as he blasted it high into the empty McCathie Stand.

U19s v Motherwell

Dunfermline had enjoyed the better of the games third quarter but as can so often happen the team on top was caught on the counterattack. Darren Smith burst through the middle with Kay and Fenwick in hot pursuit. As he entered the box the challenge of the two defenders brought him tumbling to the ground. Kay was shown the yellow card and FORBES` left foot sent the spot kick low into the bottom right to square the match at the midway point of the second half.

Motherwell`s Smith netted in 75th minute and was unlucky to have the `goal` disallowed since sub David Gormley, who did not touch the ball as it found the net, was adjudged to be offside. There were further let offs at both ends as the cup tie atmosphere intensified. Martin just got back to palm out a lobbed Phinn effort from 40 yards and at the other Dunfermline lived dangerously with a goal bound shot booted away by a defender and then Paterson getting down to deny a powerful Donnelly effort from 18 yards.

U19s v Motherwell

Five minutes from the end Smith and Murphy looked to have undone the home defence but the timely intervention of Kay denied the Well substitute. After 90 minutes the teams were level and the Pars for the second time in this year`s SFA Youth Cup went into extra time.

Chances were scarce in the first period of overtime with Phinn failing to beat Martin with a 20 yarder in 97 minutes and then Paterson pulling off a fine save from Smith turning the rocketed shot on to the crossbar.

Calum Smith as next to be denied by the woodwork. The 102nd minute run from Williamson switched play from left to right and Muhsin sent over an inviting ball that Smith rose to head at goal.

Darren Smith was the only other to come close to avoiding the penalty shoot out until Phinn was fed a chance by Pars` Smith that was beaten away by Martin in the last minute for a corner. Penalties were to decide the team that was to progress to the Fourth Round.  Taken at the McCathie end.
