Gaffer after signings and excitement

Thursday, 9th Jun 2022

09/06/22:- “I`ve played against them, I`ve managed against them, I know what that crowd can do.

At the beginning of June James McPake had only 15 signed players but this week he has added Kyle Benedictus and Chris Hamilton. Building a first team squad is the very important first job for the new Pars boss but he insists that he will not be signing players just to make up numbers:-

“On reflection, that`s something I`ve learned, not to say I just sign players for the sake of signing players.

“I think now I do look more into the character of the player and, again, that`s not having a go at anybody, but the budget, obviously with dropping a division, we`ve got to be extra shrewd. We`ve got to look at what we`re doing in finer detail.”

Never likely to treating signings in a reckless way, James acknowledged the importance of getting the balance of the squad right.

“There is a good squad here and that may sound daft, because that squad got relegated. That`s not having a go at anyone, but we`re in League One for a reason. We didn`t win enough games of football and didn`t win the play-offs.”

The statistics for last season reveal just ten wins in 45 competitive matches, 15 were drawn but there were 20 defeats.

“We are where we are and we deserve to be where we are, but we need to sign players that can, first and foremost come the start of the Premier Sports Cup, start winning games of football and get the fans off their seats here again.

“That`s what we want to do. We want to bring a bit of excitement back to East End Park, because I know this place. When there is a good Dunfermline Athletic team on that pitch, I`ve played against them, I`ve managed against them, I know what that crowd can do.

“It`s our job now to get them in the door, and then when they are here, to get them off their seat and get them behind the team for the right reasons.”
