Golly Josh a Goal

“The longer we can keep it up, the more points we’ll pick up and we’ll get ourselves out of this predicament that we’ve got ourselves into.

After playing more than 10,000 minutes of senior football Josh Edwards scored his first goal in Tuesday night’s cinch Championship match against Partick Thistle. Being unable to score in his previous 88 Dunfermline games, Josh had taken a fair amount of stick from his teammates for his lack of goals. He freely admitted:

“It has been a while coming, actually I couldn’t believe it when the ball hit the net.”

Josh hadn’t made the scoresheet in his 39 matches at Airdrieonians before he joined Dunfermline either, so his 27th minute strike was an important milestone but when asked to talk us through the moment he claimed that he didn’t really remember it!

“I think I gave Dom the ball and continued my run. I was going to run into the box but peeled off a bit. I was screaming at Dom to give me it back and I just remember taking a touch to set myself on my left foot and just smacked it. I just hoped I’d be able to get it on target and luckily it went through the defender and keeper’s legs and into the net. Brilliant!”

The 21 year old left back wished it had come a lot sooner in his career but in the context of the match, it was definitely good compensation for a slip that had handed Partick the chance to take a fifth minute lead:-

“We got off to a bad start and I have to take the blame for that. It was terrible defending but thank god I made up for it and the boys dug me out a hole as well with another two goals, I’m delighted.”

The resounding 4-1 win was one that Josh felt had been coming, the team hadn’t won in six games, but the performances have been very promising:-

“We’ve been dominating games, we’ve had chances but we can’t keep giving it the hard luck story. We came out on Tuesday night and performed again, this time we got the breaks we needed. We played some really nice stuff and opened them up, we had a few more chances, it could have been more and we defended well when we needed to.”

The fixture took every club in the Championship to thirty matches and the three points opened a gap between the Pars and Queen of the South, raising hopes of catching eighth placed Ayr United just four points above them. The league position strengthens the optimism about survival and Josh revealed the hopes of the dressing room:-

“It’s a lot better looking at it now, rather than when we’re bottom. The win does us a world a good. We’re only three points behind eighth place and we’ve still got to play Ayr at home. We’ll look forward to that game.”

Josh feels that it has been a ‘mad season’ where for a period there was a clear split between the top five clubs and the bottom five clubs.

“Now it’s almost shrunk back together because everyone is beating each other. It’s the same every year, the Championship is such a tough league. As showed in midweek, we’ve beaten fourth place who a couple of weeks ago were pushing for the title. Now they have lost three games in a row which shows how hard this league is.  

“Like the gaffer always says, we can’t rest on our laurels. It’s so important that we don’t. We’ve had some really good performances in the last few weeks. The longer we can keep it up, the more points we’ll pick up and we’ll get ourselves out of this predicament that we’ve got ourselves into.

“We’ve got Inverness at the weekend. We`ve a good record against them this season, hopefully we can keep up our performances and get another three points and then we’re only looking up.”
