Dunfermline Athletic

Ian McCall

Ian is a well know face at East End Parkand was a popular player in his two spells at Dunfermline. The first coincided with Dunfermline`s rise through the divisions under Jim Leishman where he was regarded as a talented left sided midfielder who could also score goals.

He began his playing career as a midfielder for Queens Park in 1983, before moving to Dunfermline Athletic, where he played from 1986. Ian enjoyed instant success so much so that Rangers moved to sign him shortly into Dunfermline`s first season in the Premier League.

Despite remaining at Ibrox until 1990, Ian was unable to retain a regular starting place and was transferred to Bradford City for £200,000 before re-joining Dunfermline. His two spells at East End Park saw him make 92 Pars appearances, scoring 15 goals.

His playing cvareer also included spells with Dundee, Falkirk, Hamilton Academical, Happy Valley in Hong Kong and PartickThistle back in Scotland. His final club as a player was Clydebank where he became player manager during the 1997-98 season.

A successful spell as manager of Falkirk led to Ian twice being offered the manager`s job at Dundee United, which he finally accepted in January 2003. In his first top flight managerial season the Tayside club achieved a top six finish but in the following season with the club in the relegation zone he was sacked in March 2005.Ian initially became manager of Partick Thistle in May 2007 staying until April 2011 when he departed after achieving 70 wins from 179 games in charge. In his first season in charge McCall largely rebuilt the squad, bringing in players such as Marc Twaddle, Gary Harkins and Liam Buchanan each of whom would go on to serve with distinction at the club.

After three years out of the game, Ian was appointed manager of Ayr United in January 2015, leading the Honest Men to promotion to the Scottish Championship through the play offs in May 2016. They were relegated the following season but Ian guided them back to the second tier by winning the League One title. Ayr United reached the promotion play offs in 2018-19 but he left the club in September 2019 to return to Partick as their manager.
