If dreams come true, then Bonnie Scotland I’ll play in goals for you

Tuesday, 20th Nov 2018

“You dream about that as a kid, standing in the shirt and it is something that I will try my hardest to get a bit more of.

Pars keeper Cammy Gill explained how it felt to be part of the Scotland Under 20s squad and make his international debut playing the first half against Turkey in Murcia, Spain on Saturday.

“It was brilliant, I loved every minute of it. It was something you dream of.”

The under 20s squad was taken by Scot Gemmill and Cammy explained:-

“It was a warm up game to take a look at a few boys ahead of the Under 21s tournament that takes place in March. I wasn’t the only new one there, there was a handful of us to be assessed for the squad.

Cammy was 20 in April but will qualify at under 21 level for the next two years due to a February cut off date.

“I met up with Oli Shaw from Hibs and we went through on the Tuesday night to stay in the hotel just across from Glasgow Airport. We met up with the boys on Wednesday morning, flew out and only did a light bit of training when we got there.”

Being selected to start was a great surprise to Cammy.

“I had no idea. A few of the boys were saying that I might because Rory McCrorie has been in that squad for a couple of years now and they know what he can do. I hoped that I might get on but my name came out on the teamsheet. That was brilliant.”

Standing in the line up with the Scottish national anthem being played was a surreal experience claimed the Pars keeper.

“You dream about that as a kid, standing in the shirt and it is something that I will try my hardest to get a bit more of.

“The more you get of stuff like that, the more you want it. It has given me an incentive to go and kick on.”

How did Cammy feel about his 45 minutes for Scotland?

“Even in the training, I thought I made a good presentation of myself. Leaving I have no regrets, I feel that I did as best as I could, if that is not enough to get me into the next squad, I can only do my best. I am happy with myself and it is not often that I say that.

“Scot has a certain way that he likes his team to play. I thought the boys adapted to that really well to do that in the game. We looked solid, Turkey maybe had a bit more of the ball but in the first half I felt very comfortable with the boys in front of me. We limited them to only a couple of chances.

“The two goals were killers right at the end. Everyone was saying it had 0-0 written all over it. They were quick and moved the ball about really week.

“The team was very solid, they only had two or three shots that were quite standard to be fair. I was just wanted to put in a nice steady performance for the 45 minutes. I felt that I did that.”

The aim now for Cammy is to get first team football.

“I want to get game time, obviously I want to play here but Robbo has been doing very well and if I am to play here I know that is going to be really tough.”

Sean Murdoch is currently out injured but if he returned Cammy speculated that maybe a loan could be on the cards.

“I think it is important that I get some first team football whether that is at Dunfermline or somewhere else. I need to push myself and make sure that I get in that Under 21 squad in
March. It is a big six months for me and I really, really want to get in that squad, I will do everything I can to try and do that.”
