Joe’s on his toes for challenge

Wednesday, 18th Jul 2018

Joe Thomson:- “I am loving it so far and hopefully I can keep progressing.”

Joe Thomson the 22 year old who joined Dunfermline from Celtic on a two year deal in June, was delighted to be in the starting eleven for the first competitive match of the 2018-2019 season. He told the website:-

“It was a good start. They were a hard team to break down especially in the first half but the most important thing is getting the three points and getting a few goals to go with it was nice.”

A thigh strain meant Joe sat out the pre season friendlies against East Fife and Raith Rovers before making his Dunfermline debut midway through the second half of the match against Tranmere Rovers. He then started in a young side that took on Arbroath on the Monday night before starting against Motherwell in the final pre season friendly.

“I still think I can improve and get maybe a few cobwebs away but it was good to get back out there and get another 80 minutes so that I can try and catch up with other boys who have maybe played two or three games more.

“There are lot of new faces compared to last year, there is good competition but really good to get off to a winning start and hopefully we can continue that on Sunday.”

While Joe is one of eight of those new faces, all the players around Joe are new to him and he praised Myles Hippolyte who made his Dunfermline debut against Peterhead.

“I thought he played really well. Sometimes debuts can go either way but I thought he led the line well. He is maybe not a natural striker but he looked brilliant and I think he can be happy with his performance.”

Joe had visited East End Park as an opponent in the previous seasons with Queen of the South and he appears to be happy with his choice of club since being released from Celtic:-

“It is brilliant, I am really enjoying it. It is a massive club, I have heard people say that but you don’t really realise it until you come. I am loving it so far and hopefully I can keep progressing.”

The squad is now taking shape and Joe who is willing to play in any midfield role, said that it feels like there are now two players for every position:-

“It keeps you on your toes and you need to be playing well to be in the team. If you look at the bench and the three or four that weren’t involved as they come back from injury, we have a really really strong squad and one that should be challenging for the league this season.

“If you are not on it every day or if the person who is in the same position as you doing better then they obviously deserve their chance. I don’t think anybody is guaranteed to start every week and that is only good.”
