Leading role for Josh

John Potter has changed the captaincy in an effort to make an impact

One of the first changes of the Potter era at East End Park was noticeable as soon as the team emerged from the tunnel. Josh Falkingham led out the team against Stranraer and that signalled a change of captaincy. John Potter gave his reasons for the decision:-

"I just wanted to change things about. Josh was the captain last year, performed very well with it and possibly dipped without it. I just felt that maybe Andy Geggan was the opposite after playing really well at the start of the season.

"When the captaincy came along I just thought I'd try something that I thought might work. It might get more out of Josh and it might let Andy just concentrate and get on with his game. I spoke to the two of them; they did not have a problem with the decisions I make. The guys were fine with it.

"Obviously Andy was disappointed but you probably didn't notice it with his performance in the game. He was absolutely fantastic in training, flying, and it has been possibly a release for him to concentrate on his own game. He can worry about his own game and not too many other's."

With the experience of captaincy at Clyde and St Mirren behind him, John Potter is aware that individuals react differently from the position's responsibility:-

"I think the way that Andy goes about his business, he is a leader anyway. He does it with his performances, his energy and his work rate. Josh likes the role with the captaincy in it.

"For me it is not that much of a deal, it is an armband at the end of the day. You want them all to be leaders, Andy does it naturally with his attitude and his desire.

"I just think that Josh performs better when he has the armband on. It possibly means a wee bit more to him. That was my thinking; if I can get a wee bit more out of the two of them that's the most important thing for me."
