Ton up for 21 year old Lewis who made his 100th start for Dunfermline in Tuesday`s Betfred Cup match

Lewis Martin started last season playing in the left back role seven times out of the first twelve competitive matches. This season in Jason Talbot`s absence through injury, he has started at left back again both in pre season friendlies and in the Betfred Cup. He told the website that he hopes to keep his place there:-

"The last few seasons there have been injuries that have caused me to move positions. Then I got injured and I was out of the team for a bit. Hopefully I can cement my place there."

In the games this season Lewis has made several forays forward and he says that is something his manager wants to see more of:-

"I need a few more! That is what he wants, he wants both full backs getting up and down the line. I would like to get that into my game and improve from there."

Being versatile undoubtedly helps Lewis get a game but as long as he is starting he is not worried whether that is in central defence or at full back.

"As long as I am getting a game I will try my hardest no matter where. I am at left back just now and hopefully I can stay there."

Lewis made his 100th start for Dunfermline in Tuesday`s Betfred Cup match at New Bayview and that is quite an achievement for someone who is only 21 years of age.

"I was a centre back when I came here but I am enjoying full back. I know that I can do well there so hopefully I can keep playing well and keep in the team."

The result in the opening game raised the hopes of qualification from the group section of the Betfred. Lewis continued:-

"We started well against Elgin, we didn`t get the three points at East Fife but the penalty shoot out was crucial because we got two points. If we can win the next game on Saturday then we have a good chance of going through. It would be nice to take it to the last game at Tynecastle."

Noticeably Lewis avoided taking a penalty on Tuesday night and he was very relieved when Ben Gordon failed to convert the 18th penalty of the shoot out. He said:-

"I saw it come off the post and then I worried that it was going to go in. Thankfully it didn`t."

The players had all practised penalties on Monday after training but Lewis was one who didn`t score and that explains his reticence at New Bayview.

The pre season friendlies did not go that well but Lewis is optimistic that the team has shown that they are ready for competition in the matches in the Betfred Cup.

"You want to win every game you play and we were disappointed that we did not win in pre season but it is about fitness and most of the players did get fitness with game time.

"We have started off really well in the first League Cup game and against East Fife we tried to do that but the pitch wasn`t the best. The Astro was a bit dry but it was the same for both teams. Hopefully we can play the way we played against Elgin we can play like that all season."
