Miss Cardle hit for Joe

Monday, 8th Aug 2016

"She will be coming to the games for the rest of the season! I will be taking her here there and everywhere."

Recording his fourth Dunfermline hattrick in the league match against Dumbarton was down to his lucky charm claimed Joe Cardle. Three points were the most important outcome of the opening day of the Ladbrokes Championship but Joe felt that his two year old daughter Josie Ann brought him good fortune and said that his signed match ball was for her. Clutching that ball Joe told the media:-

"She has not been to the last three or four games so I am putting it down to her. She will be coming to the games for the rest of the season, I will be taking her here there and everywhere."

Joe admitted the way the match ended, losing two goals from the penalty spot in added time, was a bit of a strange one after dominating for most of the game.

"It put a bit of a dampener on the day. To score one goal I was happy enough but to get three I was over the moon.

"We started the game well but there was a mistake at the back, we didn`t follow our runner again. They got the goal and it is something that we definitely need to work on.

"We came back into the game and got the goals. I thought we were going to finish the game comfortably but obviously didn`t. On the personal front I am delighted with another few goals and three points which is fantastic for the team."

For Joe walking out to see the League One championship flag unfurled in front of 3500 fans was a phenomenal emotional contrast to how he felt on the March day three years ago when he was one of eight first team players axed by the club administrators. Joe always reminds people just how big a club Dunfermline Athletic is and he is determined to play his part in the return to the good days.

"The fans turned up in their numbers and I know that it is the first day of the season and we don`t want to get carried away but hopefully we have a good chance this season.

"If we play the way we can do and don`t make mistakes, we are going to be up there challenging and that is what we aim to do."

Next Saturday when the Fifers travel to Easter Road to face Hibs, it will be a real indication of how strong that challenge can be. Joe returned to the Betfred Cup tie at Tannadice to reflect on how the Championship new boys might do:-

"We are getting boys back - David Hopkirk, Michael Paton and Callum Fordyce. It is great to have these boys back when they have been in the injury room for months now, they were vital for us last season. There is a strong strong team there and hopefully when once the boys are back we are going to be fighting for places.

"We are looking forward to meeting Hibs and all we can do is thrive on the three points and go there and push on, you never know what can happen."

Joe Cardle scored 15 goals in 39 appearances last season including hattricks in matches against Forfar Athletic and Stranraer. He was asked how his latest hattrick ranked but reverted back to his first which was scored in January 2010 at Firhill:-

"Every hattrick is special, especially for a wide player to score three goals in a game. The first one for me, when I came on at half time and scored a hattrick is something that I will always remember."
