Old Favourites Return

Tuesday, 11th Sep 2007

Fans have seen how successful the Hall of Fame and Legends Re-United events have been in attracting interest so this season sees the start of a regular extension of this on match days.

Special guest of the club at the last home match was Jim Bowie. Affectionately known as Ziggy, Jim made 222 appearances from the Pars after joining from Pumpherston Juniors in August 1976. He told the audience in the Kingdom Suite:-

"I am still grateful to Harry Melrose for signing me when he did. I feel that when people think about me as a player at Dunfermline they always remember the championship winning team of 1986.

"I played in some good teams before that when we got promoted from the Second Division to the First Division with Bobby Robertson at right back, John Salton, Kenny Thomson, Jim Scott, Sandy McNaughton up front. You never knew what you were going to get with Sandy, he was a top player."

Ziggy's dazzling wing work and crossing abilities are a lasting memory and he recalled the best days with Dunfermline:-

"The highlight of my career at Dunfermline was playing on the right wing for Jim Leishman. The team that we had then - Westie, Davie Young at centre half, the great Norrie McCathie at sweeper, midfield we had Stevie Morrison who could score some of the best goals you ever saw. We also signed Davie Moyes from Meadowbank and Gary Thompson, rest his soul. Up front we had Watson and Jenkins, Pink Campbell as well - he was a tremendous finisher.

"With all these guys to play with you couldn't really fail. We won the championship by a mile, we were the best team in that league."

In January 1977, at the age of only 19 he played against top flight opponents in the cup and this was one match that Ziggy singled out:-

"In my first season with Dunfermline we played a cup tie against Aberdeen. Aberdeen had a really good side at the time including Joe Harper and Arthur Graham who Kenny Thomson had in his pocket all game, that was a great memory as well."

Unfortunately the Pars lost to the only goal of the game that day. The silvery haired Bowie concluded:-

"I am delighted to be back here and it is great to see the place looking so well."
