“Even after the goal, I thought we could have won the game.

Rarely have Dunfermline dominated a game in the way they did against Morton on Friday night and not find a route to goal. The stats confirmed that they fired off 25 shots on this match but the home fans patience was tested until they could celebrate an 88th equaliser. The goal was scored by sub Lewis McCann just six minutes after coming on. The 21 year old striker was pleased to come on to make the breakthrough:-

“Even watching on from the sidelines, it just felt like the ball wouldn’t go in the net. We had so many chances and if luck had gone our way, then we would have won that match. But we’ve been saying that all season — we’ve just got to be a bit more clinical ourselves.”

Lewis senses a ‘never say die’ attitude in the Dunfermline team stressing:-

“You’ve just got to keep going. It doesn’t matter if things aren’t going for you something will eventually drop and you’ve got to take that chance when it comes.

“Hopefully, that equaliser is a moment that changes things. Tuesday is a massive, massive game now. There’s no debate any more, we can’t leave that match with anything less than three points but if we can just be a little more clinical, I don’t see why we can’t.”

Lewis started every one of John Hughes first twelve matches in charge but the Northern Ireland under 20 internationalist has been back on the subs bench for the last three matches against Arbroath, Hamilton and Morton. He showed great maturity when asked how disappointing that is?

“At the end of the day, the gaffer picks the team and you can’t be stroppy on the sidelines. You’ve just got to be ready when he calls for you. It’s been a while since I scored a goal but you can’t beat that feeling when it comes. Even after the goal, I thought we could have won the game.

“Three of my four professional goals have come from headers from corners, so it’s a knack! It doesn’t matter how the ball goes in the back of the net — off my knee; off my ear — as long as it goes in the back of the net.”

After scoring with a diving header on the end of a Dom Thomas delivery from a corner on the right, Lewis continued to an eventful, yet short, game. A block on him by Morton defender, Alan Lithgow damaged his shoulder. He hopes to be fully fit for the home game on Tuesday against Partick Thistle:-

“After the goal, there was another attack where I was dribbling through and I went down and landed on my shoulder. I went over to the physio on the sideline to let him know my shoulder was sore — but I’m not coming off a few minutes after coming on! I just thought, ‘play through the pain’. I had some momentum and I was running on adrenaline but it was very painful after the game.”
