Under 20s demolish re-instate

Dunfermline 10 Montrose 0
Sunday 25th November, kick off 2.00pm, East End Park

The result of this SFA Youth Cup was never in any doubt.  Dunfermline dominated from the start and after Alex WHITTLE scored the first goal in 11 minutes, the game was as good as over. The Liverpudlian ran on to a through ball and slotted past Dean Easton.

Blair Henderson sees his header saved

The second goal was threatened several times before Allan SMITH converted a pass from Ross Millen in 28 minutes. The scoreline was doubled by half tiime with a Ross DRUMMOND brace.  The third came through Smith, Millen and Henderson before the latter`s shot was saved by the keeper but the full back netted the rebound.

Ross Drummond nets Dunfermline`s third v Montrose

Just before the interval a cross from the right was headed home by DRUMMOND.  In between Andy Ritchie saw his effort tipped over the bar and Chris Kane and Blair Henderson all came close.

Half Time: Dunfermline 4 Montrose 0

Smith made Easton save in the first minute of the half but when Byrne`s 51st minute shot was saved, HENDERSON netted the fifth. Having recovered from bruising on his knee that had kept him out for eight weeks, Scott Mercer came off the bench to replace Ritchie and got involved straight away.

SMITH got his second and Dunfermline`s sixth with a header after Easton had saved Kane`s shot from the edge of the box.  Then the seventh goal followed two minutes later.  Mercer`s run up the left ended when Matthew Keogh took him down in the penalty box and Ross MILLEN scored from the penalty spot.

Shaun Byrne notches the Pars eighth

From a Drummond cross, Shaun BYRNE slotted the ball into the net from close range in 77 minutes. 8-0. Next Smith had a fine run from the halfway line but his shot went wide right. Scott GRAY had came on for Henderson and it was the sub`s late double that inflicted further punishment on Montrose. His first in 89 minutes came from a rebound off his original attempt and then two minutes later GRAY converted his second and the Pars tenth in the first minute of added time.

Dean Easton may have let in ten goals but he made a great many saves and blocks.  It wouldn`t be unreasonable to nominate him for Montrose`s Man of the Match

Chris Kane and Allan Smith

Coach John Potter felt that his side immediately stamped their authority on this cup tie and so eliminated any potential problems:-

"We made sure that they started right, got a few goals up and after that it was fine.  The positive start was the most important thing, the boys enjoyed it after that and got a few goals.

"We were full time players and slightly older than them. By rights we should have won the game, we are a good team but the Manager tells the first team that and it doesn`t always work that way, you need to do the right things."

For the coach the 19 year old who made his second first team appearance the previous day was his stand out player:-

"I thought Shaun Byrne stood out for the whole game. He played by example, did exactly what was needed and led the team.  Young Scott Gray came on for twenty minutes and scored a couple of goals. Scott Mercer returning from injury and sub Declan O`Kane did well."
