Shaun's Byrning desire for success

Shaun Byrne is keen to play his part in a successful Dunfermline Athletic season after getting off to the best of starts at Gayfield last Saturday in the Petrofac Training Cup. Speaking exclusively to this website the 22 year old said:-
"The pre season has been really good. We came back a lot earlier than we usually have but it is only going to benefit us at the end of the day. The lads are all fit and getting stronger. We have done well in pre season games and we took that on into last week's game. Especially in the first half I thought we were different class."
The travelling support enjoyed watching their side race into a 3-0 lead within the first half hour and Shaun revealed it was just as big a pleasure for those playing:-
"It was one of those games where everything seemed to be going right in the first half; everything that we have worked on, the tempo was just how we want to play in every game this season.
"At times last season I thought we played really well but the final touch, finish, just did not work. We were a wee bit unlucky at times as well but last season is over, we want to concentrate on doing well this season."
Shaun is well aware that there is competition for midfield places and naturally he is keen to play as many games as he can:-
"I would like to cement a place in midfield but there are quality players there as well - Andy Geggan, Josh Falkingham and Lewis Spence - it is not going to be easy but I believe that I can keep my place in the team this season."
Shaun who was captain of the Pars team that went all the way to the Scottish Youth Cup final in 2013, seemed to take a few hefty challenges last Saturday at Arbroath and while he accepts those as part of the game he thinks that he maybe needs to start dishing out more himself.
"I have maybe not been as good at that side of the game over the last two seasons but I have been working on tackling more and getting really stuck in. I need to add that to be a midfielder. It is not always going to be nice football and good passing, you sometimes have to roll the sleeves up and do the dirty bit."
A midfielder ideally chips in a share of the goals and Shaun will be trying to repeat more often goals like the one he scored against Ayr United last December.
"It just depends, sometimes when I am playing deeper you are not really going to be up. When I am playing higher up I need to score goals. That goes for all the midfielders, we should not always rely all the time on the strikers to score the goals. The midfield has to chip in with a good few and we maybe never did that well enough last season."
Shaun is a survivor from Cowdenbeath's last visit to East End Park in the play off final, a day when a 3-0 defeat consigned the Pars to another season in League One after they had started level at 1-1 after the Central Park leg.
"It was a bit of a disaster really for the club. We were really confident that we were going to go up that season. Saturday is just another game - we want to win and get into the next round of the cup. We will obviously try and approach it like we did last week and I'm sure that if we do that we will do well again."
