1968 Scottish Cup winning captain Roy Barry leads Sporting Heroes project

On Thursday 31 January at the Scottish Football Museum in Hampden, Joe Jordan helped launch “Sporting Heroes” cards, to be used across the UK in reminiscence sessions at care homes and elsewhere. This is a collaboration between Football Memories Scotland and Co-op Funeralcare, whose trained staff will deliver the sessions.

Each card in a pack includes a profile of a sporting legend such as Denis Law from football, Gavin Hastings from rugby, and many more from football, rugby, cricket, golf and speedway. These images will help the memories of those living with dementia or experiencing social isolation.

The Sporting Heroes project links in with the Co-op’s Memory Box activities, which are now UK-wide after being trialled in Fife. The original Memory Box concept was developed by Kenny Mclachlan of Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust and delivered by Kenny along with Gregor Tennant and Kelly Armstrong of The Pars Foundation, along with others.

Kenny and Kelly both attended the Sporting Heroes launch at Hampden, as well as John Simpson of the Heritage Trust and the Pars’ very own legend, Roy Barry, seen here with Joe Jordan.
