Stenny frustrate Shaun

Shaun Byrne felt that the 0-0 v Stenhousemuir was a frustrating game

"We had more than enough chances to win it, it was just one of those things. The ball never dropped for us and we missed a few great chances as well."

The chances flowed from early on in the match as Dunfermline dominated the play. Shaun was still in the Under 19s when Chris was at East End Park but he felt that the former Pars number one did well to keep the chances out:-

"Big Wally (Chris Smith) did well to stand up to Shanks. If we had got the early goal it would maybe have made them come out a bit but they sat behind the ball for near enough the whole game.

"We had to be patient because they were going to keep sitting in behind the ball again. We had a few great chances in the second half; ones across the six yard box, hitting the post - I think it was Danny Grainger - on another day it would have hit the post and gone in. It rolled a long the line and Ryan put a great ball across and it missed everyone. It could have hit a defender but we should have been on the end to finish it as well."

Match winners against Stenhousemuir have come in the dying minutes in the first three games against Stenny this season and the twenty year old Pars midfielder could have been the last minute hero this time as his 93rd minute shot tested Smith for the last time:-

"It just never fell again, it just never happened. Just one of those frustrating days, we have to pick ourselves up but a few of the results went our way with Stranraer getting beat. We have always been confident of getting second place, it is just about over the line and getting it sealed as soon as possible."

After 22 successive starts Shaun has missed out in being named in the starting eleven for four matches so he was delighted to be back in the team after watching from the bench for the last month. Jim Jefferies has said that young players who have played so many matches this season will benefit from a short rest, Shaun commented:-

"Obviously the Manager knows better than me. I was just delighted to get back in and play 90 minutes. I played during the week for the Under 20s just to get match sharpness again. Centre midfield is now one of the hardest position to get into the team. We have quality players in the middle of the park. If you are not playing well there are going to be changes."
