There's only one Jim Jefferies

Friday, 7th Dec 2012

Maybe a solo rather than a choir but that was clearly heard at Tynecastle on Tuesday night.

Pars celebrate what turned out to be the winner

The U20s 3-2 win at Tynecastle on Tuesday night was the first there by a Dunfermline team since February 1990. The match was watched by a sizeable crowd after the Jambos decision to play these matches in the stadium in an attempt to raise income from the games. Jim Jefferies, Gerry McCabe and Neil McCann sat in the Directors Box and were delighted to watch their youngsters come out on top.

After Alex Whittle had scored to make it 2-1 to the visitors from a position of 1-0 down there was someone at the back of the stand who started a solo chant "There's only one Jim Jefferies"! The Pars gaffer did not know if this was a tongue in cheek Jambo or one of the few travelling supporters but he had clocked it. Jim talked about the game:-

"I don't know where the shout came from but the goal that set that up was an exceptional football goal. It was built up, played in, laid back and set off and Alex Whittle did the move justice with a tremendous finish. The team played well, they had chances to go 3-1 up but lost out to a wonder free kick that brought it back to 2-2.

"Then we missed an open goal, so it says a lot for their spirit that they didn't feel sorry for themselves with the missed chances. Hearts are always very good at this level, so to go and get a winner and defend as they did was commendable.

Ivan D Angelo v Hearts

"When you look at our team at that level it is very well settled, a bit like the first team. Rather than playing experienced players it has been youthful. Okay Ivan D'Angelo is just over the age limit and from him and Fayssal (El Bakhtaoui) that level of football is good for them at this stage since coming to Scotland. They are doing well and the goalkeeper Michal Hrivnak had a great game. He was unlucky with the first goal and you couldn't blame him for the second but he made one or two great saves.

"We had more clear cut chances than they had and it was a fine win for them. It is a tough competition but they have a good balance and by playing together through consistent team selection one or two of them have a chance. Shaun Byrne had a quietish first half but I thought he was outstanding in the second half. He took the game by the scruff of the neck.

"Chris Kane won lots of tackles breaking things up and everyone else played their part. It was a really good team performance."
