Leighton (left) sees red as Pars Youths go down in Northern Ireland after dominating first half.

DUNFERMLINE ATHLETIC 0 INSTITUTE FC 1

Hamish French changed things around for the second game in the Foyle Cup on Wednesday night.  Injury denied him of Derek Howie, Chris Gordon and Kris Maxwell. The Pars starting eleven against local side Institute, included four of the U17 squad alongside seven of the full timers.

The Pars particularly enjoyed the better of the opening twenty minutes.  Charlie Bradshaw headed a Scott McBride cross over the crossbar and John McCulloch put Bradshaw through on the keeper but the keeper came out on top albeit at the second take.

Next in 17th minute with the Irish keeper off his line, a Ryan Thomson long range chip dropped narrowly over the top and then a McBride shot skimmed the far post. The game was played on a wet pitch with longer grass than would have been preferred.  There were more than a few rash tackles and in amongst all this Garry Leighton picked up a yellow card.

Ten minutes into the second half Garry collected a second yellow for another tackle that could never be described as malicious but he caught his opponent and Dunfermline were down to ten.  Changes were made with Nairn and then Hunter introduced and the numbers were squared again on the hour when Institute had a player shown straight red for a dangerous tackle on Scott McBride.

In the final ten minutes of this 70 minute match there were chances falling to both teams.  The best for the Pars came from a McCulloch free kick that found McBride at the far post but his shot went over the bar.

In the last minute a cruel blow brought about defeat.  McBride lost possession and Institute played the ball forward and finished well to score what was to be the only goal of the game.

Hamish French said:- "It was a really disappointing result on a wet pitch where there were lots of heavy challenges.  We should have been quicker and sharper to avoid that."
