Fife Derby ends all square at sunny Dalgety Bay

RAITH ROVERS 1 DUNFERMLINE 1

This local derby in the SFL Under 19 league was keenly contested in the midday heat at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre on Sunday. It was the Rovers who were more familiar with the playing surface and they certainly looked the most comfortable in the early exchanges. Mark Aitken was presented with the first chance from a cross from the left in seven minutes and it was a relief to see the ball clear the Pars crossbar.

Shaun Byrne makes it 1-0

Dunfermline then scored with what was virtually their first chance. In the ninth minute the ball was fed in to Steven Leslie and he worked well to turn his marker and send the ball into a central area where Shaun BYRNE connected to smack the ball past Ross Laidlaw. This changed the momentum and Dunfermline continued to attack with Aaron Scott making a surging run to a position where he was able to launch a shot that slipped narrowly wide of the right goalpost.

On 20 minutes Ross Callachan tried a 27 yard effort that Goodfellow tipped wide of his left hand post. The corner was delivered into the danger area but the Pars defence cleared. Eight minutes later however Raith were awarded a penalty after Lewis Vaughn`s progress across the box was halted. The referee was well placed and he pointed to the spot. Andrew Walls retrieved the ball and took charge of the penalty. His right footed shot was parried by Goodfellow diving to his left and Grant Munro helped squeeze out Aitken to allow Goodfellow to drop on top of the loose ball.

Dunfermline then got close to increasing their lead with Schiavone hitting the post and Drummond making Laidlaw tip the ball over his crossbar. The Rovers threat came when Malley fed Aitken and the number ten took the ball down really well but rolled his shot just wide of the left post. Just on half time a Reece Donaldson throw in was moved on by Vaughn to Aitken and this time Goodfellow saved.

Half Time at Dalgety Bay

Half Time: Raith Rovers 0 Dunfermline 1

Dunfermline had chances in the early stages of the second period, Leslie testing Laidlaw and then Kerr Young`s headed attempt at one of several corners held by the keeper.

In 62 minutes the Pars were appealing for possibly justified offside decision as Colin Wilson retrieved the ball on the right and when the ball was crossed it was too high for the defence to cut out and Jamie STEWART was well placed on the left side to crash the ball past Goodfellow.

There were chances at both ends for a winner. Leslie was wide right while Malley`s easier chance at the other end went the same way. Raith continued missing with Walls sending a fine opportunity wide left.

John MacDonald v Raith Rovers U19s

Dunfermline finished strongly but were denied a second goal. MacDonald made the keeper save and Byrne made a break that set up Scott for a shot but wide. In the end a draw was probably the fair outcome. An entertaining game that ended with an unusually rousing applause from the appreciative spectators.
