Warning second half ahead

Saturday, 7th Apr 2012

"We need to win and pick up points, keep in touch with Hibs and hopefully by the time that we go to Easter Road, we still have something to play for."

Austin McCann v Hearts

Austin McCann was left hoping for Motherwell to do Dunfermline a favour on Sunday when they play Hibs so that the relegation contest is still live by the time the two meet each other at Easter Road on Monday 7th May:-

"We were well in the game at half time. Without creating too much, we restricted them in the first half and kept ourselves in it. We were warned that the same happened at Tannadice last week when we went in at 0-0 and still in with a sniff but went and shot ourselves in the foot.

"We did it again against Hearts; lost quick goals and before you know it, you are 2-0 down and chasing it. We managed to rally a little but it was too little too late and we never gave ourselves enough time to get back into the game."

Austin can only wait now in hope that the points advantage that eleventh placed Hibs have remains at six:-

"We are not getting any closer but hopefully after tomorrow's game we will not be any further away."

In the game until Hearts scored two soft goals, Austin felt that Hearts then had a spell on top where they just hung on to possession. What assures him was that when Dunfermline do rally they can nick a goal:-

"We got our tails up and nearly got a draw. If we lack in quality when compared to other teams, we maybe have that bit of fight. We never give up and will keep going in every game up until the end of the season starting with St Mirren."

The captain could not explain what went wrong at the goals that Dunfermline handed Hearts in 48th and 52nd minutes:-

"We talked about it after the game. At the first the ball was bouncing about the box. When somebody hits the ball from 25 yards and sticks it into the top corner, you can put your hands up for it. But we just didn't manage to clear the box. The second was an o.g. but Alex Keddie says that he was fouled. There is no point in moaning about it now; it's done and dusted."

Mistakes in defence is something that gaffer Jim Jefferies has said need to stop and Ozzie claimed that was something that had been worked on in training:-

"It looked as though it worked in the first half. We frustrated Hearts but clearing your lines is a must. Like every other player we must remain positive, keep going until it is mathematically impossible. We just hope that after Hibs play Motherwell that we are not any further behind. Then we could go into the last five games knowing what we need to do. We need to win and pick up points, keep in touch with Hibs and hopefully by the time that we go to Easter Road, we still have something to play for."
