Winner comes in Niko time

Second half substitutes combine to ensure Montrose’s downfall

In Saturday’s match against Montrose, striker Nikolay Todorov took just seven minutes to make the impact his manager was looking for. It turned out to be another match winning goal for the Bulgarian who headed home a Kyle Macdonald cross in 79th minute. Nikolay revealed that he had merely followed his manager’s instructions:-

“He just said go on and put yourself about, go and get yourself a goal. I was delighted with that but I just put the cherry on the top of the cake. The guys did a brilliant job for the whole game.”

His chance came from the very situation that he looks for as a striker:-

“I always tell my wingers if they get a yard just to put it in the box, I will always be there. If I don’t win it I will make it hell for the defenders. Kyle came on and put in a great cross, I was just happy to be there on the end of it.”

The 25 year old who signed for Dunfermline in June 2021 modestly played down his winner saying he was just pleased that the team achieved another clean sheet, their third in the first three league games.

“It was going to be a hard game but the boys managed to keep a clean sheet and give the opportunity for the strikers to go and have a go. We did our job, we move on and we are thinking already about next week.

“We never created as many chances as we did against Edinburgh but you are going to face games like that throughout the season.”

Recalling his experience in the 2016-2017 season when he made 14 appearances in League One with Livingston, he felt that Montrose were just typical of what to expect in this league:-

“It is a hard League, I have played in it before. Teams will come here, look at the stadium, look at the team and always take a shot at us.

“Montrose are a good team they have always been around the play offs I think. They are a tough team and they have pace up top. They came to come and try to frustrate us and hit us on the counter but we kept a clean sheet, we looked solid and we just move on to the next challenge next week.”

The win took Dunfermline to the top of the table and Nikolay enjoyed the moment while hoping it takes him closer to a starting place:-

“It feels good but we need to keep our heads down, move to the next one and not get too het up about it” and as for starting - “I will just keep my head down, work hard and see what happens.”
