Cammy McClair - Interview

Saturday, 3rd Oct 2015

18 year old Cammy comes from Airdrie and attended the town's St Margaret's High School.

He explains his time at the Pars:-

"This is my fourth year at Dunfermline, second full time. I was at Kilsyth Boys Club from the age of 12 to 15. I had a spell at Rangers but I got a bad injury on my knee that put me out for a while. When I came back I played against Dunfermline and scored two. I went and trained with them the week afterwards and signed after a few trial games."

Given that he has recently been used in all sorts of positions that simple loosening up question was a tricky one.

"Utility player! I enjoy playing in defence, John Potter had faith in me to trust me back there. At the moment I prefer playing on the right side of defence but when I played in midfield I feel I am better on the left because I can cut inside from there."

As a second year apprentice, tell us about your normal week?

"Monday, intense training, boxes, games and sharp bursts. That will include the other youths but also first team squad who maybe didn't play much at the weekend. Tuesday if there is not a game we will be in doing a double session including training in the gym. Thursday the same and Friday we see John Ritchie or train with the first team."

Whose boots do you look after?

"I look after the boots for John Potter and Andy Geggan, Geggsie likes his boots nice and shiny. Potts just likes them clean, he is not fussy."

You come from a famous family and most people will have heard of your uncle Brian McClair. Are there other McClairs making a mark?

"My cousins, Daniel and Mark were involved with the Scottish Schools side. My dad played as well but didn't have the same drive and passion. My brother Jack is with the Fife Elite.

"I think I take my ability from my dad but my passion from my uncle because a lot of people said that my dad was a better player. Obviously it was before my time but my dad knows where he made his mistake. He was a centre midfielder or centre forward, really the same as my uncle. He is always getting on at me and Jack to always be hungry and keep passionate."

Does your uncle have time to pass on his experience to you?

"He was always away or busy watching games constantly but he stayed with me recently when my mum and dad went on holiday. We just talked all the time and he was asking what I did in training and giving me a few tips on how to improve."

Your younger brother played in your team in the pre season friendly at Armadale, how did that feel?

"Weird at first. I didn't believe that he was in the squad to begin with. I felt that I had to cover and be protective. He plays full back but can play in the centre of the defence, he did really well."

What is your target for this season?

"I hope that I can nail down a position and get a wee chance to break into the first team this year. If not put myself in the shop window for other clubs, hopefully I can get something elsewhere if not here. I would love to stay on full time at Dunfermline."

What do you do outside football?

"It depends how I feel but all football really. I'd like to play golf but I would just get frustrated with it. Sometimes when I get back it is late so I just sit down and watch the football. If not I meet my pal and watch him in his games because he is on loan from Hearts to East Stirling."
