Soldier skydives to raise money for Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust

On Saturday 28 May, at Fife Airport, Corporal James Morell (5 Scots, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) will skydive in order to raise funds for Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust.

This money is specifically to take two soldiers, free of charge, from the Army Personnel Recovery Centre to France and Belgium between 29 June and 4 July with a party from the Trust.

The party will lay wreaths at Arras where John Erskine VC was killed; at Contalmaison where ten Dunfermline men with McCrae's Battalion were killed on 1 July 1916, including two members of Dunfermline Athletic, Davie Izatt and Jimmy Morton; at Moeuvres where David Hunter won his VC in 1918; and finally at the Menin Gate which holds the names of many Dunfermline men with no known grave. In total we are aware of seven Dunfermline Athletic men killed in World War I but research continues.

One of the soldiers travelling is Private Brian Gilroy (3 Scots, Black Watch) [pictured]. Brian said:-

"I joined the Army in January 2010 and had an amazing six and a half year career although ending prematurely due to medical reasons. I have been involved with the Personnel Recovery Centre in Edinburgh for some time and they have been exceptional with my recovery process and impending transition.

"I am supporting Cpl James Morell with his tandem jump next weekend and looking forward to the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme trip with the Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust.

"This trip is a real privilege for me to attend and pay my respects for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country. "

If you would like to help the Trust finance this trip for the two soldiers, you can do so via our page on JustGiving.com at Dunfermline Athletic Heritage Trust
