Greg’s return to Greenock

Friday, 4th Oct 2019

“We want to stay unbeaten but we want to get some wins on the board as well and start climbing the league.”

Even though they were wanting a win rather than a draw, on loan Kilmarnock player Greg Kiltie feels that his current team is “moving in the right direction”.

When that direction also includes away from East End Park, Greg is hoping to keep his 100% away record in tact as well. Ahead of what he hopes to be his fifth match for the Pars he told the media this week:

“I’ve only played away from home once since I came and that was at Partick, and we won. So, hopefully my away record continues. We seem to be doing okay away from home. Obviously, the Partick game was really good and we want to continue that.”

After that good performance the plan was to keep winning games and get into the habit of winning. Greg described Dunfermline as dominant against Alloa but praised them for coming back after going a goal down:-

“That could easily have killed us and we could have gone on to lose the game. I think we showed things are changing and we managed to get the goal back and, to be honest, we should have won the game with the number of chances we had. We hit the crossbar and had chances towards the end.”

The average age of the team against Alloa was under 22 which impressed Greg who at 22 himself just exceeded that average:-

“We’ve got talented young players and it’s probably taking a bit of time. I came in on the last day of the transfer window and a few other boys had just come into the team. Hopefully we can try to get a settled team and start pushing on.”

Greg feels that the energy from young players compensates for any potential threat of inconsistency that might accompany that:-

“I do think you need that experience as well, that know-how and that ‘been there and done it’ kind of thing. If you can get the mix right then you’re bang on. For last weekend’s game we had a really young team but I think the way we played still deserved the win.”

Greg spent four months on loan at Morton last season and he loved his time there, towards the end of the season anyway:-

“When I first went it was a total battle and everyone was talking about how Morton could get relegated. We finished fifth and we weren’t too far off the play-offs.

“If the league had had an extra month or two, I think we would have been looking up the way. It just really summed up this league. We were just speaking about it the other day, if you look at the table just now, there’s four points separating seven teams.

“That was the same last season. We didn’t win in a few weeks and just kept drawing but we didn’t move in the table. Anybody can beat anybody and that’s shown by the fact there’s not much between the teams, apart from Dundee United and Ayr at the minute.”

Greg contributed to Morton’s revival scoring important goals to help Morton stay up although the Morton fans will probably not appreciate watching him play against them:-

“I got five in six towards the end of the season. I was delighted with that. That included a penalty here at Dunfermline - I got reminded about that by one of the fans at the golf day last Sunday.

“I just enjoyed playing and every time I went out onto the pitch I felt as if I was going to score. So, hopefully I’ll get that feeling back soon. I scored in my first game but I just want to kick on and start adding goals as well.”

That positive experience at Morton, 13 starts and one off the bench, helped make up his mind to go out on loan again this season:-

“It’s a case of just wanting to play - nobody wants to not play - and Dunfermline have given me that chance to play. When I spoke to the manager here, the way he wanted to play suited me and you just want to be happy and playing.

“I’ve played the last few games and I’m just getting back to match-fitness. Seeing your name on the teamsheet every week is a good sign.”

Saturday’s opponents return to Cappielow on the back of a heavy defeat last weekend so will be desperate to make amends for that:-

“They’ll be looking to bounce back from that result but you never know how it’s going to go. I don’t think anybody can predict this league.”

From Dunfermline’s point of view, unbeaten in two games, you want to continue that. Greg signed off:-

“You obviously want to win every game but going away in this league can be tough. We want to stay unbeaten but we want to get some wins on the board as well and start climbing the league.”
