Todd faces long ten days

Monday, 28th Mar 2022

“I thought in the second half we were slightly better but it is still a disappointing performance from everyone.

After two home matches in which the team’s performance earned much praise, the trip to play Billy Dodds’ promotion chasing Inverness Caley Thistle proved to be fruitless. 20 year old Matty Todd explained that was not what the Pars had planned from their Saturday in the Highland capital. Speaking exclusively to this website he said:-

“It just wasn’t us at all, it was really really disappointing from our point of view. We never performed at all.”

Matty has been in every Dunfermline squad named by John Hughes and has started 12 of the 18 matches under his charge. His half time team talk revealed recognition that the second half needed to be better:-

“We were maybe not getting up to second balls and not getting up the pitch as much, getting crosses and getting shots on goals. The gaffer said we needed to get ourselves up the pitch, win second balls and take it to our opponent. I thought in the second half we were slightly better but it is still a disappointing performance from everyone. We were disappointing in all areas.”

For Matty, however, one positive to take from Inverness was seeing Bobby Kamwa back on the park, the first Dunfermline substitution during the match:-

“Bobby does it day in day out in training, he has an attacking edge to him that can light a game up. It was certainly what we needed at that time in the game. In the final third we were probably lacking a little but when Bobby came on he showed everyone that he can impact games. It is good to have Bobby back in the team and it will hopefully get him up to match fitness.”

Hughes fielded five substitutes in an attempt to salvage something from the match with Matty himself making way for the final change eleven minutes from time.

It was Inverness’ sub Austin Samuels who made the difference scoring though with his first move and effectively putting the match beyond the Fifers.

Several good chances and near things had accompanied the introduction of Ryan Dow and Nikolay Todorov but Matty reflected:-

“Overall it wasn’t us at all, I don’t want to look at ifs buts and maybes, we weren’t good enough to take away three points.”

The Pars now have to wait ten days for their next chance to pick up points. The Fife derby has been rescheduled from next weekend due to Raith’s SPFL Trust Trophy final appointment with Queen of the South on Sunday.

In the last three games Matty has started at right back, a position he first played in the 0-0 draw against Kilmarnock in February when brought in for the suspended Aaron Comrie. He hopes to get the nod to play a part in the derby match against Raith and revealed that there will be no need to raise spirits ahead of that one:-

“Everyone in the dressing room knows that it’s a derby next Wednesday. We will definitely be up for the game. It is massive, massive for the boys and for the club itself, you always want to beat your derby opponents. Hopefully we can take three points from that game against Raith.”
