It was Assistant Dave Mackay who spoke to the media after the 3-0 win at Meadowbank on Saturday. He felt that Dunfermline played well and controlled the match from very early in the game:-

“We did exactly what we had planned to do - work it quickly from side to side and get them stretched. I felt that it was working, we got into great areas and created a lot of chances. The only disappointing thing is that we didn’t have a higher scoreline that our play should have reflected.”

You got off to a great start?

“I don’t think the game really swayed or was even at any point. It then swayed on the red card and just continued with us on the front foot for the majority of the game other than one opportunity they had straight after we scored our goal. It was a little bit frustrating that they got through one v one.

“We need to make sure when we do score a goal that we are switched on at the restart because we weren’t at that opportunity. On the whole it was a really pleasing performance other than we should have had a few more goals for.”

A professional performance in the second half against ten men?

“In the second half I thought that we created numerous opportunities and it wasn’t just from hitting it long. We worked it well and got them moving. When you are playing against ten men it is sometimes easy just to sit in and defend the middle of your goal with two banks of four.

“We made sure that we moved the ball quickly and created the gaps through the middle which came about with three or four one v ones possibly in the second half. What we come back to is that we do need to be ruthless because in certain games we are not going to have a two or three goal advantage and we need to make sure that we are taking them more often than we are at the minute.”

Should Lewis McCann have scored a first half hattrick?

“He couldn’t have had a better chance with the penalty. Normally he hits them really well. In training he strikes the ball really well and he says he made the cardinal sin of changing his mind in the run up. I have hit penalties myself and I have done that once and actually missed that one so I can relate to it.

“Thankfully he managed to get his second goal soon after and that it is forgotten about. They will miss penalties at some point in their careers so it is good that he got a couple of goals today. His overall play was much improved from what it was last week.”

Nice to see Chris Mochrie score on his Dunfermline debut?

“It is always good when you come to a new club to get off to good start. He did that, I thought it was a really composed finish. We worked it well again, slid it inside the centre back and Chris got on to it one v one. It was the one time when we were through one v one where we showed that bit of calmness and composure to slot it away. It was pleasing for him. I thought he did well when he came on.”

How big a coup was it bringing him to Dunfermline Athletic?

“We do need numbers in, we do have a really small squad so I think that it is important with the size of squad that we have that we have some versatility and players who can play different positions. He falls into that category. He can play anywhere in the midfield or attacking midfielder just off the front or play in wide areas so he showed that there.

“He started off out wide and then worked his way into central midfield. Yes, we need players who are adaptable and make sure that we can use the squad to the full.”
